Finally, I have two models that I’m not ashamed of showing to some others. I’m not ready yet for photos on this site (I bow to some of you amazingly talented people, I will probably not ever get there), but hey, I’m proud of my efforts. Now, this question: where do you put 'em? How many of us stick those models on a shelf in the living room, or (like me) are they safely parked on my little apron of a runway in the corner of my bedroom (on a bookshelt, to be exact). Just curious…thanks
well, poo…if your proud of 'em then post 'em.
Depending on the subject, I put them wherever I feel like it.
I have a display of cars in my bedroom.
Since they do not break when knocked down, I have some of the newer no-glue plastic airplane kits around my living room. They just pop-apart nicely and I just stick them back together. As these come with nice display stands, in one case, I have the Red Baron’s triplane persuing a Sopwith Camel. [;)]
I display my all-metal kits aircraft here and there, usually on top of a DVD player or speaker or something.
For my very elaborate all-plastic larger-scale aircraft kits that I had to sweat blood painting, decalling, etc., I have a special room I display them in, which is off-limits to my cats.
Armor kits, which take the least space, I literally put in a row on a surface, such as a letter in/out tray, arranging them as in a parking lot.
For a ship model I have “in the que”, I have a spot on a fireplace mantle.
The ones that are the hardest to display are the tiny metal models, since when they fall, you don’t find them until you do a general cleaning of the area, so I tend to leave these in the box.

Well, if he is like me, everytime I try to get around to buying the necesary gear to post a new digitized photo, my car needs a new tire or something.
In my case, I also have friends who come by and admire them.

As I have three kids and two cats I “had” a nice little modeling corner (ugh… more like a closet) in the garage that is off limits to the cats and the kids rarely go in there. I am currently in the midst of renovating the garage and hope to upgrade the modeling closet to something more resembling a room. Since my wife and friends (with one exception) show little interest in my hobby I basically only show them off in this forum. [:D]
Well, I did have a bunch of shelves in the garage where I do my building, and that’s where they used to be displayed. Then the shelves gave way one day and took 17 of my builds with them. [:(] Total devastation. I’ve been reacquiring some of the kits I lost [:)] over the last month or so. In any event, the wife wasn’t terribly pleased when I swung into Gallery Furniture and put down some $ to purchase a big curio cabinet. But now that’s where most of my surviving builds are displayed, and all future builds will end up in there as well, depending on size. If I build a plane with the wheels up, those go to the garage ceiling.
I put them on the two shelves over my computer desk since no one else inmy family wants to look at them. I’m at the point where a glass display case would be nice, but to build or to buy?..that is the question.
I have 2 nice display shelves in my living room where the newer ones go (pics). After that they get bumped to a shelf in the dinning room. finally they more to storage shelves in my attic where they are forgotten about and collect cob webs until I need them. I did have some on the mantel but the “old bat”[}:)] has since taken that spot over with her junk.
HA if i was up to my Ex/Gf she would have them at home everytime i build one and she sees it she says can i have that H@ll no i say if you want one buy it and ill buld it [:D] I have mine on 2ft deep shelfs in my bedroom and running out of space.
Jayzee…
I know what you mean…luckily, most all off my builds end up as someone else’s display problem - I do a lot of contract builds, so once they’re done, they’re out the door.
The ones I keep are housed in a lovely maple display cabinet similar to the one in a previous post - tall and skinny - about 4 feet tall, glassed in with a mirrored back.
It’s best to find some way of keeping them enclosed and free from dust - because dust will eventually wipe out your models and turn your hard work into something that looks shocking.
Dust-free is definately the key.
That is why I only display the metal ones or the pre-painted/decorated ones out in the livng area, since they have no delicate features, they clean up with a soap and water wipe.
The den I keep my “most precious” ones in is also a climate-controlled, dust-free environment, where the shelving is in a state of constant flux, as I tend to re-arrange it quarterly.

Well if I had my way I would put my collection on shelfs But the boss says if makes the rooms look smaller so for now I put what I have build hanging from the ceiling in our bed room or on high shelfs were little hands can’t get to them. One day when the hobby room is built I plan on having enough shelf for all including the 7or 8 large frames (B-52s & 135’s ) [:D]
Might I suggest…the ceiling! [:D]
These pics are a couple of years old. I have added a few more since. Edit…Just added three new pics from today.
I myself have bought a simple cuboard originally intended for DVD or CD that hangs on your wall at I very famous Swedish store with a door that looks like a very large picture frame. The shelves are made of glass. I had about 3 times more shelves made and I stuffed all my 1/72 fighters in there (2 a shelve). Looks good all your models together and they stay relative free from dust.
My bombers are hanging against my wall. I attached invisible nylon wire (from a fishing story) to the rear wheels and hooked up the nylon wire to a curtain rail attached to the sealing. It looks like they are flying straight down.
I have a combination of home made and store bought shelves around 3/4 of the perimeter of my basement with my desk/modeling table/computer in the middle.
Hey taden, that looks like a air traffic controlers nightmere[:)]. It does save buying or building storage space. I see everything from WWI to moderen day, you don’t mess around. I have one question, in pic 1 are those rockets I see in the back round? That one sure looks like a loc precision product.
YIPES!!! I’m glad I’m not the ATC for that airspace!! LOL!
Hey Phoenix, yup I have a couple dozen rockets built too. They are also alot of fun. I do feel a bit too guilty to fly the “nice” ones though.
I hate to say this but for now there in a few boxes in a storage unit until I leave this area, I can’t display them in my apartment because the apartment corp. doesn’t allow you to put large wall mounted shelving unit in the apartment, because it’ll damage the dry wall (and hanging pitures doesn’t?!?!?) but when I get into MY OWN HOUSE I’ll have a Hanger (I mean room) for them
Here is a shot of a my old display case I used to have my models in. My wife has since evicted me to a few shelves of the wall unit. I does have glass doors the center top section so they are relatively dust free.
