When you use oils to do washes....

…or actually, when I do, it looks a bit grainy, or seperated, after I put it on. Am I not mixing it good enough?

hmmm… what are you thinning it with?? And it is possible it isn’t mixed well enough, if I let my wash sit for a bit it gets a grainy look as it separates from the thinner… I have to keep stirring it occasionally to ensure it is mixed good.

Maybe im not using the right mixing platform. Im using the lids off bottle caps, what do you mix your washes in?
Oh, im thinning my oil washes with Mineral Spirits.

I use Turpenoid t thin mine, an oderless turpentine substitute. You can get it at Hobby Lobby and craft stores. I’ve never mixed mine with mineral sprits so couldn’t help you on that one, if nothing else it might be worth the $4 to try the turpenoid. The only other thing is to keep mixing it, I notice mine starts to separate a bit if left to sit for any length of time (and get a lumpy look underneath the turpenoid)

Yeah, i have Turpenoid, Ill try that.

Thanks

Hi Pat,

I’ve used both Turpenoid and Mineral Spirits for my oil washes (I use high quality Artist Oils), and personally I prefer Mineral Spirits. It sounds like you just need to mix your wash more before applying it.

By the way, I’ve started mixing my washes in the plastic lids that come on the top of most yogurt containers, after a fellow modeler recommended them. They are cheap, disposable, hold enough wash for what I usually do at one sitting, and on top of that make me eat healthier too!

Mark

Thanks Mark !!
