I believe the males had 2 6 pound cannons with 4 machine guns, and the female versions only had machine guns…I believe 5. I don’t have a clue as to what size or name the machine guns were as I am new to armor, and am even suprised I know that much!! LOL
Thank you for clearing that up–it always seemed to be rather a bizarre dichotomy. I honestly thought there was some sort of non-obvious “appendage” present only on the male tank that would make it make sense.
tanks were originally designed by the british navy, and we all know how…sex orientated sailors are. i guess it would only seem obvious to designate them that way
My point of view are … male is a tank which armed 6 pounder and 4 Mg … female carry only 6 mg but it can carry troops … female is a early version of apc …
Hello ,
The Male tanks had larger weapons , ( Cannons , to fire HE , to destroy bunkers , etc ) , the Female Tanks had MG’s ( to destroy infantry , ) the Hermaphrodites , carried carried both . Thus making them very useful. The best of both worlds .

The Mk V had a sponson on each side for armament. These had either a single Lewis .303 mg or a Lewis and a 6 pounder. Two of the latter resulted in a Male tank, two of the former, a Female. One of each was called Hermaphrodite. There was a thirs Lewis mounted to point forward.
The original Britishe tanks were, indeed, under the Admiralty, and the terminology continues today as we refer to the hull of a tank. The term “Tank” was another bit of British disinformation, since they were originally referred to as “water tanks” to hide their true nature from any German spies.
Haven’t y’all read your Kipling? “The female of the species is deadlier than the male.” In other words, a male tank will kill you, but a female tank will HURT you!
