What's on the bench ?

I was just wondering what everyone is working on or getting ready to work on. I have too many projects on my bench. I have the Suzuki RGV Gamma 01(almost done), Hasegawa AH-64(almost done),KC-97G(almost done), Tamiya 1/32 A6M5 Zero
(mid-way),1/35 Blackhawk (started),Trumpeter 1/32 F-7(started)
and a 1/24 Acura RSX( almost done). Whew !

Mark

Well, I am on holidays right nows, but when i get back i will be startin’ on an Acadamey 1/35 M-18 HellCat, Aifix 1/72 Commonwealth Boomerang and Frogs 1/72 Vultee Vengeance then maybe a PBY 5a Catalina

I will build them in order, not all at once, really depends when they arrive

Later Days

  • Minicraft 737-300 (almost done)

  • Revell Airbus A-321 (popped of sprues, cleaning the flash off the pieces)

  • Minicraft 777 (just banded together to work out the warping)

  • Heller 1/72 707-300 (same as the 777)

  • Various Warhammer 40k and Battlefleet Gothic models (all Orks!) in various states

And about 20 models just waiting!

I don’t as a general rule keep too much going at once, I don’t like to spread myself too thin in my projects.

As for right now, my bench looks like this:

Revell 1/32 MiG-21 MF (four years in the works and hopefully done before this spring is out)

Monogram 1/48 F-101 Voodoo (I’d say about midway through)

Modelcraft 1/48 Cessna 172 (bought it less than two hours ago, awsome find!)

Various Warhammer 40k figurines (mainly Tyranids) and a Ral Partha metal dragon. (mostly complete, save painting)

The most recent completed models from my bench are:

Pavla 1/72 Siebel fh-104 Hallore transport ( completed last April)

Revell Germany 1/72 Vickers Challenger 1 tank (completed last August)

Thats it for now, I’m quite picky in hobby shops, so I’m more about quality than quantity.

Four years in the works? I’ve got some aging in the corners of my bench. I’d like to see the Mig when you are done with it.

Mark

ok,well ive just finished a 1/48 fa18 f (italeri)i cant find a after market cockpit,so,i scratch built one,i hope its right!
as well,i’ve got a f4 e/f (itleri kit no830)& its a MESS!!it appears to be a old testors mould & i had to do major surgery to get the wings, nose & engines to fit!
(i dont think this is a kit for beginners(or dis i get a bad one, anyone else had probs?)

currently I’m bogged down with a major project. Ten years ago I bought a set of decals (1/48) for a local F-15A Guard unit. I didn’t like any of the available kits, so I’m converting a Tamiya F-15C to an F-15A. While I’m at it I’m scratchbuilding all the avionics bays, radar and other stuff up front. The cockpit is also getting a major rework. This started out as a simple quick build to make a decent looking model to put the cool decals on. Some how it’s gotten out of control.

Also finishing up Accurate Minitatures TBM (1/48)straight out of the box, needs paint and decals.
Tamiya AH-1 skyraider (1/48),decals half done.
Tamiya F4U (1/48), detailing engine - new pushrod tubes, igniton harness, etc…I may fold the wings
monagram 1970 chevelle SS454, just started…sometimes I need a break from planes.

many boxes on shelf waiting to come down

thats all
Darren

Darren, I know what you mean. That’s why I build so many different subjects, so I won’t get burnt out.

Later,
Mark

I plan to send some pictures of that 1/32 Revell Mig -21 to FSM for the reader gallery when its done, so keep your eyes peeled for that, Mark.

A lot of the four years I’ve spent on it has been more a matter of researching and correcting a few of the kit’s structural deficiencies, there’s no way the spindly main landing gear struts that came in the kit could have reasonable held up over a long period of time under the weight of the finished plane, so I had to scratch build new ones.

There was also a waiting game trying to find some aftermarket decals for it, I had already gotten an aftermarket cockpit for it from Tac Scale, but I wasn’t happy with the kit decals and there wasn’t a lot of aftermarket decals around for it at the time. I was overjoyed when Trumpeter put its 1/32 MiG-21’s out a couple of years back and all the aftermarket decals that followed them (especially post Socialist Eastern air forces markings) I managed to get my hands on a Talley Ho! set with some nice recent Czech air force markings.

I’m on the last mile with this project now, I hope

I have a problem. I start models but seem never to finish them. I will start one model and either I get to a part that I have never done before and I like the kit so much that I go to practice or do an easier model and never actually come back to it. I currently have a 1/350 Lindberg Bismark Battleship, 1/96 Lindberg missle assualt ship (definitely a practice model), a Monogram B5 Starfury, 1/35 MRC Huey, 1/72 Hasegawa Blackhawk, 1/96 Revell USS United States, and a 1/72 Hasegawa Hellcat. I start and either my self-esteeme on building it nicely or I get bored because it is taking to long so I switch and then during the Spring and Summer months I fly R/C planes so everything gets set aside. I keep telling myself to stick with one project and no more models until I get some of these out of the way. I talk with some other models or read in FSM how some of these kits only took 18 hours or even 24 hours to build and i can spend a 80 hours on a real easy kit and still not even be close to finishing it. I wish I new what I was doing wrong. I even have tried going by how-to-books using the same kits they use. My workbench is a cluttered mess.

hi - I normally don’t do 1/32nd, but right now I’ve got Trumpeter’s A-10 Warthog in the works. I got all the aftermarket parts for it (it REALLY needed a new cockpit!) and am making all modifications to the kit to make all those parts fit. In my usual 1/72 scale, I got an A-model Sukhoi T-4 (Russian XB-70 “copy”) but this will take time due to the crude nature of the kit. I want to get a Trumpeter Tu-16 Badger-C going but am waiting for some resin parts to show up.

Currently, a Tamiya 1/35 M1A1, Dragon 1/35 armor and infantry figures, Revell 1/35 M977 HEMTT, and a Revell 1/48 F4G Wild Weasel…

This is for Snoopy.

Don’t concern yourself with how much time it takes you to build your kits, just concern yourself with having a good time while you build them.

I too have built simple kits that seem to take forever to get done, thats why modeling is a hobby to me, not a career option.

If you are losing enthusiasm for what you have on the go on the bench, well there’s plenty of us who can relate to that. I’ve had more than a few modeling projects languish on my bench and never see their way to completion.

Not that long ago, a penfriend of mine sent me a quote via e-mail. I’m told its an old Swahili proverb, It has a lot of wisdom on many levels:

“In this world, a man must know three things or he will not get far in it.
One, what is too much for him.
Two, what is too little for him.
Three, what is just right for him.”

Many of my modeling projects never saw completion because I had too many of them going at one time, however I find its also difficult to work on just one at a time, I like to keep two or three in the works so I can work on one while the paint or glue is setting on another. Its easy to decide what to work on when you control what your’e doing and how much of it you’re doing at one time.

That’s the approach I’ve found that’s “just right” for me.

As for the books, they’re alright as references, but when you go to the point of following them step by step up to and including the same exact kit they’re working with, then you’re doing it someone else’s way. There is such a thing as too much research believe it or not.

As I said in the begining, its not how much or how little time you spent on it, but more a matter of did you have a good time while you were building it?

Don’t get down on yourself, just enjoy the hobby.

What’s on the bench? Why, the bench itself!! [;)]
I’ve been working on clearing out the basement and setting up an area for my “bench”. After that’s done, then it’s miniatures, miniatures and more miniatures (well over 200+ to work on [:)]), along with putting together a Panda Models B1-B Lancer “ACC” and a French LeClerc kit with my two boys.

I wish you all the best on your projects and hope you take time to enjoy what you’re doing!! I know I will. [:)]

I can handle only two, maybe three projects at a time. I’ve tried more, and only end up misplacing parts or inadvertently damaging models in progress.

Right now I’m toiling over a Monogram He-111 (the bad fit is giving me fits) and a Revell Germany U-Boat with interior. My wife bought me the submarine for Christmas and insisted that I do it as a bit of variety from my airplane work. I think she’s tired of all the “prop jobs” occupying shelves and drawers in our home!

Cool, I will keep an eye out for it.

Thanks,
Mark

Currently have a few prjects on the go, the two main ones being Tamiyas Tiger II, production turret, and Italeris Fw 190 A-8. Both were started about 8 months ago. The 190 is close to finish, but the Tiger will be some time yet.

I am trying to get down to just one at a time. I sick of having half built models sitting around getting damaged.

How… right now? Let’s see… [:0]

Here’s a link to my page about what I’m working on now… and most of the things I have going are there… most…

http://www.naplak.com/modeling/Modelers/current_models.htm

And I just started a Fine Molds X-Wing fighter, and an Acura NSX

More like what’s on the kitchen table for me.

Currently, I have an F4U-1D from Tamiya in the works. I’m debating whether or not to either finish my AMTech P-40E or Start on Fujimi Bf-109G-K. All 1/48 of course.

Sounds as if everyone is as busy as myself. Thanks for all the replies.

Good Modeling,

Mark
