Hey guys,
Thinking about doing an F4U soon and looking at the options. I’m on a budget, so cheaper is better, and I’d like to avoid the birdcage style canopy if possible. Looking at 1/48. Anyone got a recommendation?

Revell / Monogram. Probably the cheapest you’ll find.
I built the tamiya 1/48 years back and I really enjoyed it. I dont have any pictures as that plane got lost during a move years back, but I was like 15 when I built it and it looked really good when finished.
Get the Tamiya F4U-1A or F4U-1D. You should be able to get it for under $25 easily - just check eBay, Scale Hobbyist, Amazon etc…

Torn though. That Revello-Gram is 12 bucks! Hard to argue with that! LOL
Its easy to argue with it if you realize that the Revell (Monogram) kit is mis-shappen, has details from several versions, lacks details, parts fit is terrible, and the molds originated in the 1960’s. A decent, cheap alternative to the Tamiya kit would be the Otaki kit (which was also reboxed by Airfix). But the Tamiya kit can be found for around $20 or so, it is your best kit.
My birthday’s coming up. I think I can justify the Tamiya kit. 
The Hasegawa -4 is a nice kit, though you don’t have the option of dropped flaps.

If you want a good basic kit, really cheap, the older Hasegawa’s and surprisingly the Otaki kits build up with nice details. They are very basic but are half the cost of the Tamiya’s. But the Tamiya kits are so, so nice ! Rick
