Hi guys, just wanted to know what tanks were used during the Cold War.
Thanks.
What part of the cold War 1945-1988 and what country(ies)? Basically any tank used by an county(ies during that time period.
1949-1984, any part
Americans-M-26 M-46 M-47 M48 M-60 M-1 all basically main battle tanks you could throw in the M-41 light tank though it wasnt used in battle the US it was the mainstay of many other countries.
Russia- T-44 though not used in great numbers T-54 T-55 T-62 T-64 T-72 T-80 the t-34/85 was also kept in large numbers after WW2 and supplied to many countries.
Britain had what was probably the best main battle tank up until the 60’s in the Centurian but I’m not very good with their tanks after that.
France AMX-13 really a light tank but it served Isreal well enough until better tanks could be aquired, AMX-30 and I believe the AMX-32 (an export version of the 30 if Im not mistaken). That’s about all I can remember off the top of my head, I’m not really into the modern stuff and theres probably quite a few that I missed so I apologise in advance.[:p]
thanks
Are we saying Russia and US only? PZ IV’s were used by Syria until the early 60’s. Lots of armor between those times.
Well, the British had the Centurion, Chieftain and the Challenger. The Germans had the Leopard I to the Leopard 2. They also used American tanks but I can’t remember which variants other than the M47. All Warsaw Pact client states used Soviet built tanks or locally manufactured copies of soviet tanks with some modifications. Nothing too specific here, just a broad answer. HTH.
The Germans used the M47-48 and some M60s. They sold them to Isreal when the Leopard 1 became the fleet.
Dont forget the Chinese type 62 and they had a few other soviet variants.
The Cold War officially went from 2 September 1945 to 26 December 1991 (according to my Cold War certificate I received a few years back). The US was using M1A1 and M1A1HA into this time frame. The Soviets were using T-72 and T-80 tanks.
I remember knocking down the Berlin Wall on my 26th birthday (I’ll be 41 this month) and that was in 1990. We still had to show ID and enter East Berlin in service uniforms. There were still US soldier defections and East Germans trying to escape up until late 1989-90.
