Good Afternoon: I’m wondering what brands of acrylic and enamel clear folks use. I use the clear as a protective coat between paint layers. I often use Future, but that doesn’t always work for me. Sometimes the enamel washes or filters eat thru the Future, so I’m looking for something different …or maybe I don’t let the Future dry long enough. So, what brands of Acrylic Clear and Enamel Clear do you use? Thanks.
I used to use Future, but it has so many issues that pretty much all I use it for now is as an adhesive for attaching PE parts and clear parts. For clear-coating lately, I have been using the MRP acrylic lacquer clear coats. Haven’t tested those with enamel washes though, or oil washes, because those I could never get to NOT attack the paint underneath, no matter what paint or clear coat I had used in the past. Tried Flory Models washes recently, and I now wonder why I wasted time with anything else. All water/clay-based, and they don’t attack the paint.
My favorite acrylic clear is Alclad Aqua Gloss and Vallejo Matte Varnish
I don’t use an enamel clear, but I also like Alclad Klear Kotes which are Lacquer based
I use Rustoleom Acrylic Clear. I do not like enamel clearcoats because of their long dry time. I like Testors lacquer clearcoats, they work fine over enamel paints, and are just as glossy as acrylic or enamel clearcoats. I have used them for decades without any problems.
I like Tamiya for my acrylic and Humbrol for my enamel clears. And I still use Future bigtime. Although my bottle is running low.
Acrylic: Tamiya ts-13 (?) Spray , decanted…
