on german WWII armor coax MG’s, what is that dome looking thing that hovers over the top of it? it looks like an unside down metal detector.
Huh? Part of the MG, or the rain guard over the coax port?
rooster, are you talking about the MG part that is inside the tank on the radio operator side? If so I think its a headpad or something like that for the radio operator/MG gunner.
Rooster, you mean the hull MG right? The Coaxial MG was the one that fired co-axially with the turret cannon. Bufflehead is correct about the hull MG dome. It allowed the radio operator to move the MG with his head. It was adjustable.

yes, i’m sory. its wasn’t the coax, it was the hull mounted. i have noticed it on a few models so far, but had no idea what it was. there’s the MG, that’s connected to another piece that looks like a handgrip, then there is another piece that looks like an upside down dome metal detector. i thought it could maybe be a vent for fumes or something.
all for better stability while firing/sighting targets.
