What is Tamiy Flat base?

I bought some at the LHS the other day thinking it was like a flat cote, so I brushe dsome on an old model and it quickly turned from clear to white as it dried. So I thinned some and sprayed on the bottom of something, and same thing, but tistayed slightly more clear. Am I just not thinning it enough, or is that not even the right use for it?

This is a flat base to mix with other paint to make them look flatter. If you want to spray a dull coat, you’ll have to mix it with Future. A ratio of 5 parts Future with 1 part Flat base will give you a flat coat. I personally go down to a ratio of 3 to 1 for a very dead flat finish but at that ration, it may become whitish a little bit. A ratio of 10 to 1 will give you a satin finish.

You can also mix it to a glossy paint to create a satin look or a flat finish.

Hope this help.

Ya, Tamiya Flat Base is something you mix with either Tamiya clear coat or other paint so you can control how flat you want your finish to be. Never use it strait as is or thinned, it needs to be mixed with something else.

I use about a 4/1 or 5/1 ratio of Tamiya clear to Tamiya base.

Do a forum search on Tamiya Flat Base, this topic has come up a bunch and there are some great guidelines and info on how to use it in the other posts.

Hey thanks guys, I just got some future a few days ago, so Im glad to know I can use it to make a flat finish. Also, sorry, I forgot to use the search feature [BH] Shame on me!

Don’t worry Ian. Me and Scott (and several others) will always be glad to help. Right Scotty?
