i’ve read about the use of “future” to protect and seal a model before weather techniques are applied. i’m getting back into scale modeling again and in the past i didn’t know of this magical stuff. what is it? how do i apply it? cheers!
Future is the acrylic floor finish from Johnson Wax. I’m not kidding.
See Swanny’s The Complete Future for all the info!
Wow…impressive stuff. Looks like it can be used for pretty much everything. I may dip the family cat in the stuff to see if we can get a few more lives out of her…
You beat me to it, Bill![(-D] It’s a given that Swanny gets linked whe some say, “…Future…?”
Just be careful. Showing up with a bottle of Future may make the wife think you intend on waxing the floor, or worse, that you think she needs to do the floors.
I was skeptical of Future the first time I heard about it’s modeling uses. Now I swear by it! It’s nothing more than just clear acrylic. [:)]
On top of what Swanny says on it’s website, I heard that some crazy folks use this stuff to wax the floor. Isn’t it strange?
Yeah, I heard that too. Then my wife actually did it.
Man was she mad when I did a panel wash on all the lines in the floor after that…

what is future?
the bounce in your step! that is future!
the smile on a child’s face! that is future!
the gleam in a young girl’s eye! that is future!
future future you’re our life, our love, our all!
what is future?
that is future!
yey. actually i kinda think it’s over-rated. give it a shot though, most people seem to like it.
Over rated? Not really when you consider that you get a 1 quart bottle of clear acrylic for about $4. The price of a comparable clear acrylic model paint would be about $30 worth of one ounce bottles.
Still tastes like crap mixed with ginger-ale! [yuck]

Yes, but your esophagus will be ready for decals and weathering! [:D]

thou shalt not ponder negative notions on the subject of future. gotcha.
Over-rated? Maybe a little, but it is quite amazing considering it’s floor polish.
I’m also new to the concept of using Future on models - I know what it is, though - I polished my black low-quarters with it for a few years.
But doesn’t it give the model a glossy finish, no matter what you want the finish to be - like abused armor, veteran aircraft, rusty anything-at-all? That’s one of only two questions I have about Future. The other is - after you’ve used it in your airbrush, how do you clean it out to make sure no residue remains? Or is it basically clear model paint?
Yes, Future makes for a glossy finish, … which is ok because your decals will stick better to a glossy surface, and you do your weathering (i.e. oil washes etc) on top of the future, and then spray on a flat coat for the final finish to seal it all in.
You use the same thing to clean your airbrush of Future as you would for any other acrylic paints… Windex (the amonia disolves acrylic). [:D]
Modelers use future to give the model a high gloss finish .This is necessary to have before decals are applied . The decals lay down best on a glossy surface . The glossy finish will give better adhesion and little if any "silvering " . A “dullcoat” finish can be spayed over the glossy “Future” finish to get a semi gloss or dull / flat finish .
Cleaning your airbrush , do it as soon after use as possible . I use a acrylic cleaner that Model Master / Badger makes . There are other brands of cleaners that are used .
I’m sure more answers will follow .

Yep, but the beauty of it is you can cut it with a little Tamiya Flat Finish (X21) to acheive almost any lustre you want.
Ah so. Now I begin to understand. Thanks!
