Hi guys![8D]
I bought Hasegawa’s Mitsubishi Zero type 11. 1:48. In the instruction it suggests to paint the cowl in “Cowling colour 125”.
I also have the Tamiya 1:32 Zero and overthere it’s Tamiays X-18, semi gloss black.
what gives???

This is a silver black color. I usually make this out of enamels but you could do it with acrylics just as easily. Pour some flat black into a pop bottle top then add two or three drops of silver and mix well. It should look like a very very dark gray or just slightly light black with a faint metallic sheen to it. From here I add thinner (lacquer thinner for enamels, windex for acrylics) and airbrush it on.
Cowlings were painted a blue black color, a blue so dark, it looks black. I believe Polyscale made the color. I’m not sure about Testors, off hand. If you wan to try to mix the color, it’s 20 parts black, 5 parts of blue similar to Blue Angels blue and 2 parts royal blue. Hope this helps. Swanny’s post beat me. It seems we have a difference of opinion. Go with what works for you.
I think most WW2 Japenese AC had the Blue Black on cowls & antiglare panels. I’ve never found an FS for it, I just mix 1 part ModelMaster Dark Sea Blue with 1 part Flat Black. It comes out Black with a slight blue highlight. Can’t say its totally accurate, but matches photos OK.
Shmodeler;
I just used testors flat blue and black. Mixed until it looked right. Don’t remember the ratio though. Sorry about being no help.
Steve
Thanks to all of you guys!
Well I guess it’s 3:1 so far for, Blue black VS Black silver.
st_gorder, yes you did help!
Swanny I guess I’ll go with the rest of the hurd[#wstupid], Thanks for your help.
Ahhh… wait! did any one thought maybe to mix Black Blue and Silver together just so everyone is happey??[;)]
If you look at the cowl of my Rufe in my signature pic, you’ll see what Aeromaster marketed as cowl blue/black. I believe that White Ensign Models now has this (along with many other IJN/IJA aircraft colors.
For anyone building WW II Japanese aircraft, I recommend this site highly:
In the “Reference” section, you’ll find a lot of info on the China air war (where the type 11 was used), along with a page of notes dealing with the issues with Tamiya’s 1/32 Zeke.
Hope this helps.
Testor’s has a ‘Black Pearl’ that I’m using on a P-61. After a light coat of Dulcote it looks great.[2c]
