i want to try bare metal foil to mask a canopy. what type do you recommend and how do you apply it. thanks for the help.
i use bmf for masking certain areas that is hard to get to with tape and such. i use chrome, but an color will work would work for masking. it comes in sheets of about 6" x 11" and you just cut off a piece the size that you need, peel the backing off and apply it to the subject, then burnish it down good with a burnishing tool. this stuff is very, very delicate and will tear if you look at it wrong.
Bare Metal Foil has become sort of a generic term, but the best IMHO is the original product from the Bare Metal Foil Co., located in Farmington Michigan. They offer sheets in several finishes & of very good quality. They have a web site, but I don’t have the URL handy. I think Squadron carries it, but I get it at the LHS so not sure.

For those looking for the best (in my opinion) BMF here is their web site url:

No question, the other guys are right: the original is by far the finest quality. However, I think we tend to use the original chrome for masking out of habit. I believe the black chrome makes the raised and engraved lines much easier to see and thus to cut around. I have had nothing but lousy results from Model Master foil. It comes wrinkled, then it wrinkles more when applying the stuff. It costs more per square inch, is less flexible and adheres poorly around the edges. Other than that, it’s great stuff.
