I was wondering what is the best type of glue I should be using when model building, I see different CA’s ( super glues ) the testors tube kind, brush on ones, Is the plastruct plastic weld solvent cement any good?
Depends what you are gluing, mate,
ask at you hobby shop, & findout if there is a club near you…
Always read the guidance & use notes, esp the health warnings!
Some swear by and/or at the following:
For Plastic kits: Liquid Glues, various makes, as below
MEK: (Methyl Ethyl Keytone) Agressive, hard to find, but hard to beat, Health Implications! don’t breathe it in!
Plastruct: Very agressive, essential if you are using Plastruct ABS
Tube Glues: Various Makes, Hard to control, can eat models if used too thickly, don’t use as a gap filler!
CA’s, essential for resin, & metal to plastic joins, avoid the cheap Dime-store versions, waste of money.
Not an endorsement, but Zap-a-gap & 21st Century work for me, get the type in a bottle with a nozzle, easier to control
1 thick gap filling, 1 thin for general, & fexible types are available
2 part epoxys, usefull under certain circumstances, undercarages, etc,
there are specialist adhesives to glue canopies to aircraft, sigh…
read the tools & techniques forums for more info
enjoy
The plastruct weld solvent will work on plastic models. It will melt the seam and produce a good bond . Make sure you have ventilation as it does give off fumes. Use a fine brush and just let it seep into the joint. Be careful around clear parts as it will run and would produce a frosted appearance where the solvent has got on the plastic. I use it and others when I can find them. Oh and make sure to put the lid on securly after as it will evaporate. It doesn’t work on resin. Just be careful and HAPPY MODELING.
