What exactly is "survivability"...

…when we talk about armor vehicles?

Is it:

-The ability of the crew to survive if their wehicle has been hit or,

-The ability of the vehicle to remain operational (of course the crew has to survive) once it has been hit?

I guess “operational after being hit” can be defined as able to fire but not to move or able to move but not to fire, some kind of significant damage…

Thanks…have a good weekend [:)]

Mainly, it is the ability to keep the crew alive, but can also mean the ability to keep the vehicle combat operational. For instance, an Abrams tank has tremendous crew survivablity and the tank itself can take a hit and keep on fighting.

An MRAP, on the other hand, was designed to protect the crew from land mines or IEDs. It has great crew survivabilty, but the vehicle is often a total loss.

Kinda like a “mobility kill” on a tank is quite survivable for the crew, who then turns around and kills YOU…[;)]
