The simple answer is Humbrol thinner. Most other enamel thinners can be used though. I’d stick to the thinner from the same manufacturer as the paint.

While the answer that the OEM thinner is best may be true, it’s also the most expensive. Several years ago, I discovered that DuPont 3812S enamel reducer worked every bit as well as OEM enamel thinners. I’ve had no problems using it with Humbrol, any of the Testors enamels or even the old Pactra Enamels (still have a few usable bottles of that around). Now some people may think the 15 to 25 bucks a gallon (depending on what shop you buy it at ) is expensive. But you get 128 fl oz and the last time I checked at my LHS, a bottle of Model Master thinner cost $2.49 for a 1 1/2 fl oz bottle. Plus even airbrushing my models, a gallon will last me a minimum of a year.

im about to start spraying eneamels (as soon as my compressor gets here!!!) and was wondering what makes a good thinner for all brands? ive read some where that mineral spirits/turps do the trick but not sure which one? also, would tamiya enamel thinners work with all enamels?

There is no magic thinner for all brands although many will work with different paints.
I use a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and filtered water for MM Acryl, and I use mineral spirits for MM enamels.

so mineral spirits it is… im gonna go n get a big bottle of the stuff…
i bought a small jar of humbrol thinners and used them with tamiya enamels and had good hand brushed results… and i though that the humbrol thinner smelt like mineral spirits.

If you can find it the thinner called T.r.p.s (Turpentine Replacement Paint Solvent) is really good according to Greg (plasticmod992) and he swears by it.

hey i bought some methylated spirits, coz the store attendant said there was no such thing as mineral spirits and i though i just got the names mixed up in my head, so will this stuff thin enamel paints?
