I’m really not much in a modeling mood right now after hearing about the recent passing of a friend that I’ve known for about 40 years. But I can’t sit around the apartment all day and twiddle my thumbs either. Somehow, I need to keep occupied and keep my mind stable so to speak.
So…I had a leftover 1/72 scale D-21 drone from an old Revell SR-71 Blackbird kit. I’m thinking and hoping that it shouldn’t take too long to build this up as the parts count is very small.
My goal is to convert it into a unmanned combat air vehicle with an internal weapons bay. A pic below shows two types of missiles I could potentially use. The yellow tape on the lower fuselage half shows approximately where the weapons bay may go.

Winnie Mae. Oops, its upside down and wearing only my favorite primer, Stynylres, and some white Tamiya putty. Next step is to apply the final finish with Tamiya X-2 gloss white. I attached the landing gear struts using UV resin. Solid as a rock. Give it a try if you haven’t used it. Scalemates says my version is the original 1958 boxing which means the decals are 68 years old. At this point I can only hope for the best.
Airfix SM-79 Sparviero.
If one engine is good, then three must really good! Trying to decide if I should attach the fiddley bits and landing gear before I paint. Mama mia the Italians turned out some good looking airplanes (and cars too). If I’m brave I’ll try to freehand airbrush a camouflage scheme. My workbench is nearly full doing two airplanes back to back.
I’ve got the 1/48 Trumpeter kit of this beauty. And ya - the camo is holding me back from getting her on the bench.
Progress on my dioramas. Didn’t feel like setting up my light box or taking the models outside, so the pictures aren’t great.
But basically, the ground is mostly done on both (I still need to add grass to the Tiger diorama). Now I’m waiting for paper plants coming from Green Stuff World.
Sorry to hear about that Eric. Good on you for keeping your mind focused on other things for the time being. Hang in there bub.
Nice!! I’ve always liked this unusual looking bird and yours is looking good so far.
Right about that. I’ve got the Trumpeter and the latest Eduard release in the stash. Cool lookin’ aircraft for sure.
Ahoy k-dog. This model in 1/48 scale would overwhelm me, it would be huge. And yes, the Italian camouflage is intimidating.
Whoa HO HO!! That’s a great looking build Mike. Frickin’ home run with that one.
What did you use for paints and weathering?
Almost done with the G506 straight 6 engine. MiniArt sure did its thing with these kits. his engine, if you can believe it, has 32 separate parts.
Trying these new paint pens I picked up at the art store for the trim on my Corvette build, it’s going really good so far:
Fingers crossed there’s no weird reaction when it’s clear coat time…
So you painted the whole model with the pens? Interesting,I have used AK pens for details, but not a big area
AFV Club Sd.Kfz.233 (RAL8020) and Tamiya Kübelwagen (RAL8000) for a diorama I am working on … wheels, seats etc are loose fitted for the photo … jerrycans are for into the holders on the 233 sides.
Figures are a mix from Tamiya, HobbyFan and self-printing.
Nope, just for the silver trim bits.
And more progress today. Glued the top and bottom fuselage halves and also did a bit of puttying.
Hope to start painting sometime this week as soon as I figure out what colors to paint it.
Thanks Joe!
AK Interactive Faded OD over AMMO One Shot primer and weathering with Tamiya panel liner and AMMO washes and pigments.
Well, this part is done. On to the rest of the AMT 1966 Buick Wildcat. Motors are much harder when you have the knowledge, skill, and $$$ to make them more realistic.
