What color is "Burnt Iron"

I am doing my first kit and have come to the engines for an F15E Hasegawa kit that calls for burnt iron to be used on the plastic and photoetched metal of the cones (I do not know aircraft terms for the engines-these are cones that stick out aft).

Anyway, the instructions reference Gunze Sangyo Hobby Color(H76) as well as Mr. Color(61) numbers. When I look these up on the internet, the former looks like an off-black while the latter is a definite gray. I think I prefer the black and maybe can use some of my RR colors such as grimy black or oily black?

Anyone have a clue on which is correct? [%-)]

I’m not a jet modeler, but in a past real life I saw many of those cones. Soot covered, with some colors that looked like rust! Best I can describe…the junk looked like a mainly black…a little grey…some rust with some cone showing. Where the rust comes from…no idea.

Thanks for the input. I prefer the black colors and will weather with rusts.

Bummer! I was hoping that it was not that kind of non-descript gray. Think I will change it to a balck as in the above post.

Here is what I envision Burnt Iron to look like:

Have you looked at pictures of F-15s to see the coloration of the engine area? Google image or sites such as Airliner.net are good sources to find close ups of the area you are talking about. This will help you mix and match using colors you probably already have on hand. Such as silver, aluminum, gloss black, brown and dark blue. Start with a few drops of aluminum or silver and add in a drop of brown. Play with the combos until you find the best combo and record your formula for future uses.

Also I tried some RR colors iIhave and yours looks a lot like “burnt umber”. I also tried “oily black” and “grimy black”. They also had a nice look.

As you know, what you show looks nothing like any of the 3 “burnt iron” chips that I have seen, but I sure like yours the best. I will try your mixing suggestions.

BTW, is there any site where I can learn the proper terms for airplane parts? Unfortunately, instructions never seem to itemize.

With Gerald’s help, I found a real neat website for the F15E, called F-15E Strike Eagle.com

It shows many neat pictures of the plane from all angles, including the engine exhausts and thus the colors. Looks a lot like Gerald’s color but more mottled. Also, has some reviews of models building, etc.
