What color do you paint aircraft tires?

I have three wheels painted a differnet colors trying to find the right one. Testors rubber looks too brown, panzer grey looks too light, and oily black is a little too dark. What do you guys use?

Satch

Tamiya Nato black is good.

Sometimes I use a black magic marker, like a Sharpie. Hope this helps!

I’m assuming that you are shooting for post WWI tires (vulcanized). If so, my favorite is Polly S Grimy Black. It looks great by itself, but hit it with some light earth tone washes or pigments and it looks like the real thing.

Try Floquil’s Grimy Black or Weathered Black, then dry brush the tread area with a dark gray.

Ditto!

I use either GW Chaos black or Revell 302. I use grey dry brush or pastel to tone it down.

Pollyscale (or Floquil) Grimy Black. I swear by it.

Testors use to have a color called Rubber when they were useing the tiny 1/2 ounce square glass jars in enamel but I have’nt seen it in awhile. I also like the Tamiya Nato Black.

Ditto x 2. I have tried a few different blacks (even something called Tire Black from the Aeromaster acrylic paint line) but all were either too grey, or in the case of regular black colors, too…well, black [:D] . But I have started using the NATO black from Tamiya. It is still a nice real black color, but with the slight “chalky” (best I can describe it) look of real tires.

I too used to use Poly S grimy black but alas, that was one of the casuaties of time in my supplies. I wil have to make another trip to the LHS for grimy black. Thanks for the answers!

I keep a mixed bottle of RLM 66 and enough black to get the color I like.

Pink, tan, or light grey for me.

I mix my own.
MM enamels. Start with a couple drops of flat black, mix in a drop of neutral gray one at a time until I like the looks of it.
Final color depends on the era of a/c I’m working on, what war or year the thing flew in. I still have some of that testors rubber color and have used that for certain items but never tires unless I customize it with a mix.

Pink?

Oh wait, you’re one of “those” WWI guys! [;)]

I use to use testers rubber. I have used the Grimmy Black and liked it, but have a tough time getting it now. Now I use Polly Scale’s Scale Black, I might darken it if I want the tire to look newer. It looks good to me. Though in my next paint order I throw in some Tamiya Nato Black to give it a try.

Testor’s Rubber with a brushing of dark grey pastels…

I like Tamiya’s NATO Black, but they just came out with a Tire Black in their spray can line which is lighter than the NATO Black but darker than Panzer Grey. I’ve got a Christmas party tonight and work in the morning (I’m at work right now), if I can remember tomorrow after I get off work I’ll post a photo of the two.

50/50 Testor’s rubber and flat black
