Hello from the depths of the Great White North. I have been a member of this forum for quite a few years now. As many of you may have guessed, I am from North America, Canada, the East coast, New Brunswick, where we have suffered through another winter of really deep snow, and it ain’t done yet.
What gets to me, or what bugs me, is, the improper use of pronunciation or diction when people are on the forums. Don’t get me wrong, I am not here from the government out to cure all your woes. I check out the forums a lot, both to see what other modelers are doing or to find out new methods of doing things or to see how new models appear. I haven’t mastered the ability to share my models on here, YET, but someday.
But when I am trying read someone’s post and they use all CAPITAL letters, they kind of put me off in that they come off as, either they are ANGRY, obnoxious or are trying to shout down everyone else or just too lazy to bother to change the Caps Lock key.
The other thing that gets me is when people cannot bother to type the correct spelling of words. I am not talking about the American versus Canadian spelling of words like Color (A) or Colour (C). What I am talking about is the spelling people use when on the web, the shortcuts per say of cellphone texting. Just because you are on the web doesn’t mean,we can not carry on an intelligent conversation. I guess that when I am reading another’s forum post, and I have to decipher what they are trying to say. It puts me off and I figure that person either has no clue about the subject they are going on about or really doesn’t exist with other people. I know that these people are not illiterate because, evidently they mastered how to use a computer and can read enough to know how to find things on the WWW.
Now when I say America, I mean North America, ( Canada and the U.S.A.). I know that the schools in America and elsewhere in this world, do teach spelling and writing, and to just throw it all away to appear to be gangster or Text savvy or whatever else it is called really gets to me. People are not going to get along if they can not understand each other.
I too am bothered by the poor grammar and spelling of some of the messages. On the other hand, I just let it reflect on how much credence I give to the message and let it go at that. I get the idea few proof their messages anymore before hitting the reply button. And, I see a red underline on an improperly spelled word, so it is easy to catch. It would be nice to have a correction function like the spelling functions in some word processors, but I guess it never hurts me to pick up the dictionary I keep by my computer.
Fist off, what does this topic have to do with an Introduction?? Second, of all the things to complain about…[bnghead][:(((]. This type of thread does nothing for scale modeling, and only enrages folks and starts flame wars and gets people in trouble. Its happened too many times before. I hope you can learn to deal with bad grammer and start focusing on modeling.

Amen. Personally, I understand that we all come into this place with varying levels of linguistic and writing ability. Heck, for some of us, English isn’t even our native language (yeah, hard to believe that most of the world doesn’t speak it, let alone write in it). As long as I can puzzle out the meaning of the post, and if I have something to contribute, I’ll respond. I find that I have many things to learn from all kinds of folks, even those who may not be able to express themselves in a proper, accepted, exquisitely spelled manner.
I’m a free lance writer by trade. I feel your pain. I’ve never gotten anything but grief when I mention this though, so I gave up. Some get it. Some don’t.

p.s. I would suggest asking a mod to move this to the FSM Ready Room, where off-topic subjects can be discussed. There is no hard and fast rule that says we can only talk about modeling, but it does help to have it in the correct subforum. Just a heads up.
I can get through poor grammar and diction, spelling errors, and the like. What really irritates me the most is the incoherent, rambling posts by some members. It’s like trying to follow their wandering mind as they try to type what could be either a statement, a question or the price of tea in China.
I’ve learned to click the “back” button if I see certain ramblings.
I don’t mind it. I do try to punctuate and spell correctly. I’ve noticed some people seem to have problems with words like their and there. I believe that since the forums are global, some are fortunate enough to speak and write multiple languages, like English. I envy those folks.
Although, sometimes reverting to a little bad English is kinda fun depending on what the post is.
That’s so totally flippin wicked man. I ain’t never gonna get as good as y’all.
I never learned how to type. I use the Christopher Columbus method of searching for a key and landing on it. Then, I go back and look for the little red lines and the spell checker. Other than that, if I can make sense out of a post, it’s OK with me.
I’m not here to critique grammar and punctuation. I figure if there is good information and good intention, I can look past the mistakes. I’m not a grammar nazi, I work with enough of these personality types, that I have sworn to never become one.
