What brands and shades of green and olive drab do you guys use for your WWII and modern armor and vehicles. All of the models I have and will be working on are all support type vehicles and armored cars. What i want to know is stuff like how do the the Testors sprays match the enamals and acrylics they make in the bottles and vice versa?
I do not own an airbrush so i need to purchase a sprays and a brush paint that match well. Right now i am using a matt olive drab “camo paint” that i purchase at the local auto parts store [i can’t remember the maker it might be Kylon but it is good quality] which has worked really well for me so far but it is hard to match a brush color with it for obvious reasons.
Martian,
This might help a little
Look under "feature aticles"then under “olive drab”
The closest spray to bottle that I know of is Tamiya’s. I’m not sure how close Testor’s is. The best IMHO for OD on armor is from PollyScale. It has a faded look from right out of the bottle. And weathers really well.
The model below is a Milicast 1/76 M-8 Greyhound done with PollyScale.
hope this helps

I use Tamiya’s Acrylic XF-62 Olive Drab (Which Shermanfreak recommended) I also add just a touch of white to lighten it up a bit.
I use Testors Model Master OD in the can… easy to use and the color looks close enough to the restored WWII armor I’ve seen at museums and such for me.

I like Model Master OD acryllics.
I use Tamiya colors, they have some XF-?? colors marked as nato brown nato black nato green ( for modern tracked and wheeled vehicles ) and for the WWII tracked and wheeled vehicles I use a lot of different colors depending on the vehicle?
Let me know if you come across a PLS in the 1/35 scale out there since you’re doing support vehicles, if ya could?
I’ve used both Tamiya XF-62 and Testors Model Master OD Green from the can. I am not going to get into the fight about which one is “right” but I will tell you not to mix them. The Testors is a lighter shade. In fact, I am experimenting with using the Testors (bottle version) as a drybrush shade with the Tamiya as the base color.
I been using Model Masters OD from the spray can and then touching up with a brush using Model Masters OD from the bottle and they match just fine. Then again after I get done weathering I wouldn’t be able to tell anyway.
Hope that helps.
Upto this time I am only using Tamiya Acrylics and I have not have any problems. Tamiya has the Olive Drab and Olive Drab 2 (Lighter and more on the green side). Althought I have not seen the Olive Drab 2 in bottle, I have used the Olive Drab from the Spray Can and Bottle in one kit and they matched just fine.
there are many brands who make a OD paint. everyone has their oppinion but i personally like to get some basic OD paint, mix a little yellow-a very little-, and some yellow green. spray it all over a flat black primer and it looks faded and field abused with some weathering.
What’s a PLS? I’m still a newbie.LOL Thanks for all the info. I purchased some of the Model Master Olive drab acrylic in a bottle and after shaking the hell out of it for a while it just looked so light to me. That is what promted my querry. Now that I know it matches the spray bottle I will pick it up as well. Walmart seems to have the testors sprays the cheapest [about 3 bucks] but they didn’t have OD so I’ll check another “Wally World” before i settle on the hobby shop price of $4 or more. Thanks for all of the great info!
Nice grey hound “byrnndye”. I still have to weather the body and paint the ties on my Italeri M-20. I bidded on a Italeri Greyhound last night but lost.[:(]
This is a PLS ( palatized load system , made by oshkosh)
Okay now i recognize it. i don’t think I have ever seen that version of that truck in kit form. I have seen that truch as a “ten ton” truck i beleive from Italeri. I beleive it had a different bed than this one pictured. I remember liking it but it was out of my price range that day.[:(]
What color green do you guys recommend for modern vehicles and armour?
If I were you, I would get the Model Master Olive Drab. It works so well with the airbrush and the color is not as dark as Tamiya’s.
'Just my ten cents worth.

Use the same OD for both modern and WWII?
