What Are Your Other Interest??

Hello everyone,

I know all of us have immense involvement in scale modeling, and military history. But like most of you I have other interest in life that I like to be involved with. When I was 8 years old my dad took me to a motorcycle speedway race in Costa Mesa, CA. at the fair grounds…I was hooked, we went every Friday night during the race season until we moved to Montana 3 years later. Ever since then I have been a large follower of the European teams in the UK, Poland, Sweden, Australia, and Norway.

Watch this to understand what I am talking about if you don’t know.

I also enjoy target shooting at long range and CQ target at a outdoor range near home. I have various 308’s (7.62mm) and AR15’s (5.56mm) that I really enjoy useing. I am currently learning how to “Reload” my own ammo…and slowly purchasing the tools needed to do so. I’ve always been one of those individuals that like’s to learn and try new things.

Last…My wife and I enjoy backpacking the back county of the mountains in our beautiful state. We take trips that range from 3 days to 8 days.

So…let us know what other interest you have.

Great idea Hunter. In addition to modeling I really enjoy golf in the warmer months. I also love to read historical fiction books. My wife is even worse tho…she can read a book in a day or two lol!

Great topic. I enjoy watching Texas Rangers baseball and classic cars shows. I also enjoy a good book!

Andy my dad loved playing golf in the spring and summer also. I would go out with him once in awhile. And my wife is like your’s…she can have a book done before I get to the half way mark LOL.

MM,

Are you able to attend many car shows throughout the year?

Do a lot of shooting in the summer. AR and .22 mostly. Also do a bit with slug guns (12, 20), muzzleloader (50cal)…these are more “tools” than anything, the first 2 being more for fun. Also do archery and crossbow. Those things obviously lead me into deer hunting. Salmon fishing. Been playing guitar for almost 30 years now, had a few bands(nothing now). Wood working. I thoroughly enjoy the “around the house” work (remodeling, repairs, landscaping…anything that improves things!). Also…#1 Flying! I’m just getting back into it (after 8-9 years)…the job market is picking up again, hopefully I can get a foot in the door somewhere. Had a couple flights over the last year, not enough to really count for anything. Went up this evening, to a towered field to work on my radio skills (or lack there of)…did good. Felt better than anything else you could do, with your clothes still on! I feel like a pilot again!

If we had mountains here…I’d be all about days long backpacking/hunting trips. I’m stuck in the flatlands with a huge population…nowhere to go with any real freedom, and not running into a crowd.

Used to whack a ball when I worked at another shop, but haven’t touched a club in 10 years. Still do some wheeling in the Cherokee, been a member of PNW4WDA since '76.

More into gold prospecting/mining, belong to 3 clubs, and am part owner in 3 claims. Also got into metal detecting with two mid/upper type machines, and belong to a local club.

Outstanding Fermis…you’ve got some great other interest.

GH,

I have always wanted to try gold prospecting. One for the adventure, and I would enjoy the outdoors and scenery. Great interest to be involved with.

Computer Graphic Artistry though won’t return to it till after completing the “Main Body” of my Regia Aeronautica Italia builds some years from now.

I used to be into things urban public transportation notably U.S.A. buses built before 1975 but after the U.S. Department of Transportation was created in 1965 they’d taken over the industry ala minute regulations, State of California piling on theirs also since Governor Ronald Reagan (he’d added them as well) making it a de facto national goverment bureaucracy.

I’d not ridden in any public transportation conveyance since 2005, don’t want to again either.

There are a number of Western Sierra locales in Northern California where there is public gold panning, nearest to me is Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park next to Coloma little over 1/2 hour from where I live. Once in awhile hear a news story about somebody making a nugget strike there.

Well, lets see. Started drag racing the year I got out of HS. Did it for a few years until I discovered how hard it was to drive the race car to work every day but couldn’t afford a second car with 2 kids to feed. Switched to R/C car racing and R/C Sailboat racing. Threw in a few R/C planes along the way but had a bad habit of making very hard landings. Added hunting and target shooting for relaxation. All the while these hobbies were going on, I built plastic models too. Started in 1946 and still do it today along with a few of the others.

Jim [cptn]

Wow Jim…very broad and interesting hobbys. I was into R/C cars for awhile. I was into 1/5 scale gas. I had 2 HPI Baja 5B’s with a lot of aluminum upgrades. I aslo had acouple 1/10 trail rigs.

Besides modeling, I enjoy fishing, especially for bass and panfish. I’m also a member of the USS Alabama Living History Crew. We have drill one weekend every other month and rennact life aboard the ship during WWII. This is tons of fun and I get to meet so many folks from all over.

Chemteacher,

That would be something to see. I bet that is an absolute blast. I hope one day you might post photos of that. Very fun, and interesting!!

It is a blast. We have a 40mm Bofors mount atop turrent 3 that “fires” using propane and is able to traverse and trane. We also have 3 20mm mounts that work the same way as well. Mock air attacks are staged on the Saturday afternoons of drill using replica fighters from the Mobile airport. I am assigned to a damage repair division as a firefighter. We have also piped aboard veterans of any battleship if we know they are visiting that particular day. This is such an honor to be able to do for visiting vets.

Hmmm…where do I start?! I suppose it depends on the season around here. Winter time is stuck in the house, so other than modeling I do cross stitch on occasion. Summer time is a plethoria of things. I have my Dad’s 69 Z/28 so I work on that. I rebuilt the engine in it 10 yrs ago when I got the car. I’ve restored my current motorcycle, I swear it spent more time on the center stand than the kick stand when I bought it. We have a yearly camping trip in July, and I also hunt with the hubby. So trips to the range to shoot guns for fun is a pretty frequent thing. Photographing airplanes whenever I get the chance is one of my favorite things to do as well.

Lets see, I used to do 10-15 motorcycle track days a year. I was getting ready to get my CCS race license when I crashed and ended all that fun. I still enjoy motorcycles, but, I haven’t been riding in five years. My wife and I also enjoy target shooting a few times a month. I’m thinking this year I may attempt to do my own reloading as well. During the warmer months I do like to hit the links. But, most of all, I enjoy spending time with my wife, kids and our grandson. Now to get a couple of them hooked on making models! lol

Not as many as I’d like! I tend to frequent the local clubs but the national shows always elude me.

Scale anything. I was into RC cars way back - 1/10th scale Associated RC-10. Got pretty decent at the local track. Then on to RC Planes, then Helicopters (scary world), and I have a small RC sailboat for the pool. Still have the planes but since my boys went off to college I don’t fly them much. Mostly sticking to slow flying foamies and the choppers.

On to 1:1 - got into High Performance Driving Events with my Boss 302LS. Been about a year or two since I’ve been on track but used to do 8 or 9 weekends a year.

Also like the drag strip in my 09 Charger. Current setup is a bit of a beast on the street and no longer 'smog’able, but @760RWHP on Q16 race gas with a procharger F1A @ 14lbs of boost its a lot of fun. Previous setup was a magnacharger @ 8lbs of boost and ran around 11.5 in the quarter (about 480RWHP).

At Barona 1/8th mile with my daughter riding shotgun. I redlighted and got smoked by a monster chevelle (that was in my old build).

Also do a little trout fishing, skiing, water sports - though sold my boat after the kids went to college (theme here…). Occasional shooting - love my M1A
