Westland Wyvern

I just saw in the latest edition of FSM that Trumpeter is planning on releasing a 1/48 Wyvern. Does anyone have any indication of the timeframe of the release, approximate kit pricing, and whether this is all new tooling? Any other information anyone has is also appreciated.

With Trumpeter coming out with this kit, I may wait to build the Classic Airframes version—unless it’s the same thing reboxed. [;)]

Thanks

Gip Winecoff

I don’t know the projected release date, but I doubt it will be the same kit as the Classic Airframes offering.

Regards, Rick

I thought Trumpeter’s Wyvern was 72nd scale?

I’m building the classic airframes wyvern now, and as I was warned on this forum; NOTHING fits. Impressive aircraft tho. Out of interest I am fitting the wingfold set intended for the dynavector vac-form, that dont fit too well either.

I started mine last week.
I dry fitted the fuselage parts first and added styrene shims as needed (tail).
No real problems otherwise - yet.
Joining the wings will be fun.

I’ve been building the Dynavector vacform on & off for a few months now, with the Compass Rose resin updates to the cockpit, props & fairey-youngman flaps, and I’m very impressed with the fit so far, especially with this being my very first vacform.

If the Classic Airframes issue doesn’t fit very well, I can recommend the Dynavector version and the updates I’ve mentioned above. It’ll be a very nice kit once finished. [;)]

Yea I’ve just built their sea vixen and I thought the injection wyvern would be a bit more relaxing. Wrong. Have you got the wyvern nicely referenced? I don’t and I may have a few questions for you.

I just completed the CA Wyvern and it turned out awesome. Nothing out of the usual for a limited run kit. Just lots of fitting, filling and sanding

My reference material is woefully inadequate, but the addition of the Compass Rose parts will really bring the detail up to scratch, as they’re VERY good. I bought the wing fold kit from Airwaves, but I don’t think I’ll use it this time, as it could interfere with the Fairey-Youngman flaps on the underside. Plus - I’ve never cut the wings off a perfectly good plane, and don’t think I’m quite ready to start! It’s going to be hard enough chopping big lumps out of the wings for the flaps & so forth, never mind amputation!

If you need any info on the cockpit, flaps or prop though, I’ll happily take some snaps of them & provide you with some dimensions.

A lot of the difficulty I’m encountering are down to me fitting the airwaves wingfold intended for the dynavector, having to shim out the wing thickness. But I haven’t had to do anything to the tail like oggy. The only reference I need is to compensate for the kit shortcomings: ie, would you be so kind as to measure the distance from wingtip to the wing fence and flap mechanism housings, the kit has no indication as to were to put them. I would love to see some pics of the completed flap setup, those fairey youngman flaps are like spare wings! I can tell you that all the pics I have found of this aircraft parked show props fully feathered with blades aligned at 45 deg from vertical and wing tips NOT folded. Except for the TF1 at Yeovilton.

The wing fence is not a problem - I’ll happily do that for you, as I’ve already cut the slots for mine, as they’re marked on the plastic on my vac.

As to the flap mechanism housings, I’m not entirely sure what you mean - is the wing fence a combined flap mechanism housing, or have I got the wrong end of the stick? It’s a week or two since I’ve sat in front of her, so my memory’s a little vague at the moment. I’m also not at home at present, so I’ll have to do something about your request this evening.

Mike & Snibble, SAMI, Nov '04 edition, had a detailed build of the Czechmaster resin Wyvern. Some of the pictures in that may help you. Also, Aeroplane monthly, October '96 had an article featuring the prototype’s. The pic’s aren’t too detailed but it’s strange to see the Wyverns in Natural metal or camouflage. I can forward that one to either of you if you’re interested?, just drop me an e mail, petergsoden@hotmail.com.
Cheers
Pete

Right - I’m at home now, and I’ve got a pic of the 2 wing halves for you to look at

the distance from the wing tip to the wing fence is 95.87mm perpendicular to the wing. You can see the slots I’ve already cut for the fences to go into once I’ve cut out the flaps, which I’ve marked for removal with cross-hatched marker pen. That’s where the resin Compass Rose Fairey Youngman flaps attach. It’s going to be very tricky to do, but the set includes a little jig on which you can assemble them & their actuators at the right angle to the wing itself.

Pete, thanks for the offer. Problem is I only have net access at work and since my job is “bench and wrench” rather than a desk job, computer time is limited by which way the boss is looking and e-mail could end up anywhere. The info mike has kindly provided really should have been in the kit instructions but they are so vague as to be a posotive hinderance.
Now I have the fuselage assembled I can’t help noticing that the thing looks, well, phallic! As I am just experimenting with a wash/sludge mix involving KY I suppose thats appropriate.
So, musketeer stripes all round then?
