WESTLAND WYVERN INTERIOR COLORS

Hi

Could anyone cast some light on the colors to be used for the interior of the Westlland Wyvern.

I have bought the Trumpeter 1/72 kit and I’m using the 4+ publication’s book as a reference.

The kit’s instructions recommend silver for the wheel wells, whereas 4+ states that Sky should be used for the wheel wells and the inner side of the doors, and ‘Alluminum’ was limited to the struts.

The color pics in the book (showing a TF. Mk.1) show silver colored struts and inner side of the doors, and the same aircraft - as showed during restoration - sported silver wheel wells as well.

The same TF. MK. 1, sports a generally black cockpit interior, whereas black and white pictures of Mk.4s, elsewhere shown in the same publication, show a lighter color than most of the gauges and the ejection seat.
The kit’s instructions state black is the color to be used.

What I’d like to know is:

  1. What parts of the landing gear assy are to be painted Sky.
  2. Is the struts’ silver/alluminum a metallic paint or is it Natural Metal.
  3. Is the general cockpit’s interior color black, or is it a very dark grey - e.g. Extra Dark Sea Grey - instead.

Thanks in advance for any clarification anyone can provide.

I’ve just painted mine all black (it’s a 1/48th Dynavector with resin cockpit), and once properly highlighted, it looks great. I’ve seen those pics you’re talking about too, but I’m not too concerned. It was probably just a shade of mid/dark grey.

As to the wheel wells, I’ll be painting the wells sky, with the struts all metal. I suppose I might highlight a few things in the wells with different colors to add a bit of detail, but sky will be the color of most of it.

Thanks a lot mikeiw,

Was there some official regulation, that you know of, concerning the aircraft interior colors, and if yes, how strictly was it enforced - i.e. how much leeway would an aircraft manufacturer be allowed?

The reason I’m asking is that I’m also planning to build some Hawker Sea Hawks, and I was wondering if the same colors apply.
I have dowloaded pictures from some of the walkaround sites, and I have noticed different combinations of ‘silver’ and Sky in the landing gear components from one aircraft to the other.
Indeed it could be also one or more cases of inaccurate restoration, but…

I’ve found it quite difficult to find definitive answers to colors on the Wyvern, as it’s not the best documented aircraft type in the world, possibly due to its relatively short length of service. For instance, I had the wheel wells sitting on my bench because some reference implied sky, while others said silver. I eventually glued them in with the resolve to paint them sky, JUST so I could close up the wing & make some progress!

I’m not aware of rules for what color must go where, but I suppose there were some. I’m afraid I’m not THAT bothered in 100% accuracy though, especially if it slows down my already glacial build speed! [;)] I try to get it right, but if I can’t find the reference, I go with the majority.

I’m sure that if you looked hard enough in the FAA or MOD records, you’d be able to find some obscure set of regulations about cockpit color at this time, but it’s a case of “is it worth the effort?”. Not to me, as I have limited time at my workbench already, sadly [:(]

Hi Mike,

Thanks again and…point well taken![^]
My build speed is also on the glacial side, but I also have to admit a little obsession with accuracy…[:o)]

Well, it’s not going to keep me awake at night either![;)]

Have a great weekend and…happy modelling![:D]

I’m glad you took that in the way it was intended. Believe me Pete, I can be a bit of a stickler for detail at times too, which probably explains why we both build at similar speeds! [:)]

You have a good weekend too bud, although I won’t be modelling as such, I’ll be continuing the buildup of my new workshop, so it’s kind of related [;)]
