I have a 72nd Special Hobby kit of this, but its still in the stash. Not sure when i will get a chance to build it.
From what i understand it was not very succesful and was not in service long. Some nice photo’s there, thansk for the link.
Classic Airframes did a limited run kit of this plane in 1/48 scale some years ago and I recall that the quality was not as good as more recent kits from this manufacturer. But It did build up into a very nice looking example as long as you are good with filling and sanding, etc etc. I do not know how much luck one would have in trying to find that kit today, but it is a multimedia kit, with a lot of resin parts for the cockpit and wheels, and white metal landing gear. modelingmadness has three reviews of builds of this one and it looks very good in the end. Man, now you have me wishing I could snap one up…
Airfix 1/72nd = A50096
I think Airfix did two molds of the Whirlwind, I built the older one. The newer is of course better and more detailed, I have heard. I have the Classic Airframes kit and will get to it someday.
Here is the 1/48 Classic Airframes. All the fun and joys of a typical short run kit, but turns out nice:
