well here are some in progress shots of a 1/72 scale TBD-1 Devastator(updated)

well I am currently building a Airfix/MPC TBD-1 Devastator well here are the shots I’ll post more when I work on it some more.

Off to a good start Mike. Keep us posted.

Regards, Rick

those wing lines look awfully… pronounced i guess. but from what i can see in the small pictures, the small cockpit looks pretty good!

Hey I also like to do up old 1/72 airfix kits, whats the detail like? And are you going to be doing any scratchbuilding for the cockpit etc?

well afterall it is a typical Airfix kit it does lack detail on the inside. But if you look at the 1/48 scale Revellogram TBD-1 you will see the exact same “Pronounced” lines. But I wlll try to get closeups after I close the fuselage and touch up the air crew. and then comes the canopy[:D]. Then its back to the paint shop.

And then there was a beginning. It all has to start somewhere. Keep us posted.

well I did get the Fuselage together ill get Photo’s later today. Then I’m going to paint the faces of each crew member flesh color and touch up the helmets and paint the goggles silver. and then finally mask each canopy section and hand paint the frames interior green before I spray paint the whole assembly Metallic Silver for the NMF.

Mike,

Good to see another fellow Airfixerupper around - They might not be too high on detail - but they can still be made into a decent kit - looks good so far - You gonna do it with folded or extended wings ?

Chris

Hi Mike,
Looks great. I love that kit and am waiting for the supposedly soon to be released White Ensign etched set. Don’t take this wrong, and I’m the last person to pick nits but the pre war TBDs were actually painted, not NMF, and the interior was silver also, not green. Here is a link with some great pics:

Wow,looking good,keep us posted

I think buiding up a lest than perfect kit-pronounced ribs, panel lines etc. is a challenge but there is also a nostalgia about Airfix kits. Along with the NMF are you doing pre-war markings (they are so colorful-although I hate painting with yellow paint-it’s worse than white or red).

Dan

well the markings that came with it are for a Pre-war Devastator from Torpedo Squadron 5 off of the USS Yorktown. And I am painting the top of each wing Yellow probably with either Testors or Tamiya Yellow. Bossman the wings will be folded since is a much natural pose for a Naval aircraft.[:D]

Oh man, 1/72 is sooo small! I’m impressed by anyone who can do that stuff. I’ll be anxiously awaiting more progress pics.

well here are some more pics please note that the fuselage is assembled

well with that taken care of the fun parts will be coming up

Looking good Mike, I will be very interested to see the finished product.

well here is even more

pretty much have to retouch the frames in some areas and then paint the sight black again then its onto the tail and wings.

Nice work on the office’s ‘cage’; that one is a royal PIA. Looking good so far.

Say that is pretty darn good looking!

yeah I used liquid mask on the canopy and it worked out pretty well with no bleed through but I will put some future on to touch up the canopy glass.

BTW for those who are also building this kit please do not follow the pictorial directions when attatching the “V” to the cockpit because it shows attaching the “V” to the top of the bulkhead and this would definitely interfeer with canopy placement. Thank god I built Monograms 1/48 scale TBD-1 and remembered where that “V” went.

Looking good so far.[tup] Masking all that canopy framing looks a tough assignment but you did a nice job of it. Can’t wait to see this one finished.
