I just got some Weld On #3 and love this stuff.
Dumb question:
Is it possible to (carefully!) attach clear windows and canopies with this solvent?

I’d be very careful on clear parts. I prefer to use Testor’s Clear Parts Cement. Better initial hold than white glue but in a pinch you can still get the part off if need be.
Well, I’m trying to find an easy way to get rid on the seam between the frame and the fuselage (like on the windshield). The Weld On seems to be good at that with non-clear parts.
I suppose I could use the Testors Clear Parts Cement (basically white glue, no?), then finish the seam with CA gel or very carefully applied putty.
It’s quite a bit different than white glue in both consistancy and appearence in my opinion. I use it as a filler as well if necessary. It flows into small gaps very nicely and accepts paint well.
You can get weld on?
I haven’t ween it here for about 15 years or so.
I got mine here .
The main trick to using stuff like that is to have air moving over the kit when you do it, and to pick the clear parts that you’re gonna use it on and position the model carefully… You don’t want fumes to collect under the parts, that’s when they get crazed or fogged… I’ve gotten away with it a lot, but some parts you just don’t wanna do it to, ever… Learned the hard way on that, and I didn’t have a vacuform then…
Dip canopy in Future…scrape off contact surface…apply Weld-On to model, then press canopy in place, hold until secure. Mask off canopy as you would, clean up any oozing and paint…baada bing
I KNOW you ain’t talkin’ to me about usin’ Future… I hate that stuff, 'cept on floors…[8D]
Weld on will melt the clear plastic just as regular plastic. Meathel Chloride is melting agent. Living in the Nanny State of Kaliforina, has decided that I am not responceable enough to use it. I have also noticed that Tenax 7R has dissapered from my LHS shelfs. Whats next…
All forms of perfume and deoterant. Peeeewwwwww!
Sherman,
I’m up in Fresno and I just bought some Weldon yesterday at Precision Plastics, here in town. If you can’t find it locally, let me know and we can get together.
Mike
Thae only thing i know of that leaves a foggy film on clear plastic is CA. i use nothing but pro weld to attach my clear parts and have never had any issues with it. you just need to be vary carful when applying it.
Mhvink, thanks
for the offer, I am useing Weld on #4 , about half streight, slower melt time , which I can buy in Orange County. I can get #3 but I have to go to San Diego county to buy. The AQMD has banned #3 in LA and Orange County.
I would not want you to get in trouble shipping it
I may have miss idenitied the chemical, it is
Methylene Chloride
I used to use it a lot, but it was so volatile it would evaporate away just sitting on the shelf! I think I used more thru evaporation than actual model building. Sometimes i’d dip a brush into it and the brush would be dry by the time I touched it to plastic! Of course that all may be due to the dry, thin air here in Denver.
