"Weathering a T34/85"-steps EDITed 2/6/09

WOW STEVE!!! I love that. To quote a fellow forum memebr… I want to marry it[;)] It would tak eme too long to say all the things I like about it but I love the weathering over all but really dig those oil stains. Might well be your best work.

  • Bad finish
  • Rotten welding
  • Disgusting paint finish
  • worn and badly finished markings
  • Dog rough plates on armour
  • Filthy manky dirty
  • Running gear encrusted with crap

Think you captured a typical T34/85 perfectly, now just put it on a beautiful polished base with an engraved plate and bring it along to a competition. If the Gold is not placed beside it, then simply tell the moron/dope of a judge that Terry has spent four years building a T34 and he thinks yours is worthy of a gold.

In finishing Soviet subjects its up there with Disastermasters BT, SUPERB.

Terry.

hi SMJ[:)]—i don’t know much about t-34s,[:-^] but dude ya left the front and rear fenders off!—WHAT WERE YA THINKIN’ ?–I gotta go check my references ----I’ll get back to ya------------------tread[8D][tup][tup]

That’s one dirty T-34. Looks great. Like everyone has already said beautiful job.

Rode hard and put up wet, just the way I like 'em![tup]

Terrific job, Steve!!

The more I see of people taking these old kits and making masterpieces of them like this, the more I’m convinced that competent finishing can mask almost any weaknessses in a kit. Ain’t NUTHIN to a master modeler!

The weathering is truly noteworthy. Not overdone, to be honest, and realistic for sure.

Three thumbs up! [:D]

Proof yet again great minds think alike. I’m 50% finished with the T34 I got from you.

Absolutely fantastic brother.

Hmmmmm more ideas to plagerize use…[:-^]

Steve this will be a perfect match for your Panther[:P]. Outstanding job[tup][^]. Even with the rubber band tracks.

I see what you mean about bringing the dirt and dust up the sides of the hull. When my T34 gets mated to its base I’ll be adding more dust to tie it into the groundwork.

Steve, excellent build and killer weathering.

I think that the steps are not that many, I mean if we are all write it down our own steps, I’m sure will see that there are that many steps.

I also recomend to try push-shadow method (aka. modulation), this process will enriched the color for a single monotone tank.

Nice work Steve…

Guys: Thanks to everyone for the kind words…it reminds me of christmas morning opening the thread in anticipation of your comments…much appreciated[#toast]!

wing_nut: She’s already spoken for (Panther G) so you can’t marry it[(-D] Who was that who made that comment originally…biffa?!

terry35: Great list of T34 armor flaws…glad I “did it all wrong, correctly[;)]” just like the Ruskies!

treadwell: It’s amazing how many modelers omit the fenders…it just looks better that way!

doog: The old kits are so nice because the "I have to get it right or I just blew $100 (kit, AM goodies, etc…) pressure is off. I feel like I can experiment more. Not only that, I literally built this thing in about 4 hrs…plus some sanding time. Less build time=more weathering time[tup]! Glad to hear you think it’s not overdone. I held back a few times, and I’m glad I did. I think the dirt color will be perfect when it’s set in its Berlin context…red brick, clay, mortar. I will probably add a few larger chunks of debris later… I’ll wait and see once I get the dio’ going!

agentg: That T34 I sent you is a great little kit, I hope to score another one from a vendor!..I plan to do the winter camo’ like the box art! Still waiting for pic’s on the stug and now this one…did I miss them, shoot me a PM!

panzerguy: Panther G+T34/85=dioramafest 2009! No way I’ll have that done by AMPS Natty’s…unfortunately. Hopefully that guy who was selling those plaster cast dio bases at AMPS East will be at Natty’s…he had some real cool industrial ones with smoke stacks that I liked. I plan to add some steel beams, etc…and then put the tanks on…yeah baby!!!

Glad the dust/dirt visual helped…you got one fine build going there!

Carves: I think I used just about every weathering technique in the book on this beast…but shoot me a PM or link on “modulation” if you would, thanks.

Here you are;

Rejected again[V] Manny has made that comments a few time about modles he really like. Figured I would beat himn to the punch this time.[;)]

YES…it was Manny!..now that you mention it. I remember replying, “now that is a passion for modeling!” when I read his comment. I don’t recall if I got that comment on one of my builds or it was someone elses. I guess that’s my new goal…to have Manny propose to one of my builds. Kinda’ like a Dad watching out for his daughter…Manny, would definately get the boot…with all those nude builds and all…

…didn’t mean to hi-jack my own thread…back to T34 comments!

Steve,

Looks like it ought to be right at home in the planned dio. [tup] It looks like the right side track join might have come undone just a bit or perhaps it’s the camera angle, but some strategically placed rubble ought to conceal that without any problems. Looking forward to seeing this one on the base along with the Panther. [;)]

On a somewhat unrelated note, instead of updating or adding pics to the first post of the thread, could I suggest/encourage you to do that in future threads by adding a reply with the new pics instead? That way the thread has “continuity” when viewed/read instead of having to read through then jump back to the original post to see the “end” photos. [:)]

I can’t believe I missed this thread untill now. Nevertheless, SMJ your T-34 looks simply amazing. Thanks for the weathering tips, might have to try a few of those out.[8D][tup]

wbill76: Those tracks are a pain, really crap[yuck]…but I did better than with previous Tamiya oldies. I think soemstrategic groundwork will make it OK…thanks for the tip. As far as the thread continuity, I considered adding the finished build at the end…in hindsight I think that would have been better…maybe it willmake more sense when I fill in the weathering steps.

mg.mikael: Thanks for looking, and I appreciate the comments…she was a fun build and I learned a couple new tricks along the way too!

SMJ - I fiiiiinally got this page to load! I really need better internet service. [:(]

a) Awesome build! Especially for the old Tamiya monster.

b) Even better list! Thanks for taking the time to type it up!

I know you’re always trying to get me to skank up my builds with some heavier weathering…perhaps if I take the time to go through your list of post-paint “stuff”, I can achieve something a bit more…USED.

I’m now off to try to find your Flak thread - didn’t know you were finished! [tup]

dupes: Thanks!..The list is BEFORE I started…I ad-libbed along the way. I will be editing the sequence a bit and adding pic’s too…stay tuned. The Flakvieling was completed late December…maybe that will help you find it. I still plan to call you today…got some GREAT news from FSM I want to share!

Guys: If you care to read the the steps and see progress pic’s accordingly for this build I organized it last night, posted the text and have started inserting the photos…about 25 so far…It’s being edited on the original thread.

My, my, my… I just had to pull this one back up.

!http://th174.photobucket.com/albums/w98/chenguang/smiley%20icons/th_stink.gif**You** built a nasty tank…

Now ya got me interested in doin’ another t-34.

Thought I had done sounded off on this one but it got past me. Keep up the good work Steve.
