I’m kind of thrown for a loop here
Normally I use an acrylic clear coat and then Tamiya enamel based wash to weather my builds. Unfortunately, enamel / varsol / white spirit based washes tends to destroy Bandai plastic. If I want to use an acrylic based wash instead, what’s the best type of clear coat to use?
Acrylic washes dont give you as much work time and control unlike enamels and oils. Stick with the enamels for a better outcome. You can use Tamiya laquer gloss spray and then do your enamel weathering over top for best results on an un painted kit. If you can find an alternative to Future floor polish, id do that for an acrylic base that will be tough. Otherwise, I suggest fully painting your kits to prevent weathering products from stress cracking or making your plastic brittle.
Perhaps try an oil wash with a very mild thinner such as Mona Lisa brand. It should not attack the Bandai Plastic. I can’t remember what exactly I used on my Bandai X-Wing 6 years ago…
Update: I tried using Duplicolor lacquer clear coat on a test piece and it seems to have worked. I left the clear coat to dry for a day or so before applying the wash to be safe; it’s been a few days so far and nothing has cracked or snapped off ![]()
As far as parts cracking and breaking from solvent washes, you can use the wash before removing parts from the runner, cleaning up, and then installing the parts. What causes the parts to crack and break is stress from the parts being snapped together before weathering. You can do this as an experiment on extra parts, both on the runner and snapped together to see what I mean. Enamel washes don’t do well on ABS and or Polyethylene caps, so be careful around joints and ABS parts like many inner frame parts.
