In the past I used an acrylic wash over an enamel gloss coat wiping off the access and everything worked fine.
I recently purchased some future to use as my gloss coat but my wash will not lift of the future coat. leaving me with a mess. My question is it better to use an enamel or oil based wash over the future. What do you guys use
I now thin them with mineral spirits, Scott. I tried Turpenoid, it did a great job thinning them and they flowed on real nice, but it seemed to take forever for them to dry…almost a week as opposed to overnight with the mineral spirits. Is this the norm?
That’s one of the beauties of living in Nevada. It’s very dry here which really helps with drying times. I also set my oil washed (and freshly painted) items on my lazy susan in the spray booth, and leave the two overhead lights of the booth on. They generate a fair amount of heat which also helps with both drying and curing times. [:)]
I use oil wash with mineral spirits over future all the time with no problems. Acrylic should work over future also but it must be cured completely as future can be diluted with water. But I stick with oil, as I can do a wash at the most overnight after a future coating.
Thanks, Scott! I’ll have to give that light trick a go. It’s fairly dry here, but NW BC I imagine is a bit cooler than where you are. We’ve still got over a foot of snow on the ground. [;)]
The paint booth light definately puts out some heat, and I usually let my fan run for an hour or two as well right after doing the oil wash. Keeps air moving through which also speeds up drying time. I’m very lucky in that I was able to get the huge Pace Peacekeeper spray booth (about 3 feet wide, at least 2 feet deep) which leaves lots of room for laying out parts to dry etc. Heck, I can even spray on the left side towards the filter and ducting without getting any spray on the drying stuff on the right side.
