Wash Question

I did a wash on a vehicle the other day using oils and thinner, over an Acrylic base coat. I did forget to seal the base coat. My question is how long should it take for the wash to dry using mineral spirits and oil, because it seemed that 24 hours later it was still very wet. I ended up taking off the paint and redoing the base coat because of the sealing issue, but how long should I wait for the wash to dry.

If you are using artist oils, it could take several days or so for your wash to dry, depending on how much thinner you used. Personally, I don’t seal my base coats prior to washing. I put washes over straight enamel base coats. Interestingly, the wash tends to “bleed” slightly around the edges of what I just washed. In many cases I like the effect, since oils and greases tend to leave larger stains than just in a crack or crevice. But then these are armor models I’m talking about. For aircraft, a sealer is almost mandatory, I think.

I’m new to the site but if you are doing an aircraft you should seal before adding an oil wash i used to have the same problems as you where 2/3 days later a wash would still be wet . the same technique can be used on armour as well seal first then add washes until desired effect is achieved then to finish dull down using a matt varnish.
