I started the rebuilding of the first kit I did and I’m missing the twin tail fins off the top and was hoping somesone had a 1/72 kit that they could trace the shapes from and email them to me so I can replace them. It a 3rd? prototype Hornet but I think any tails would work.
I’m converting it to wheels up since the wheels are long gone. I don’t need to work on the wells but the cockpit could use something. any ideas?

What kit is it? I have a lot of extra Hornet parts, so if you tell me what all you need I might be able to help.
It is the 1980 Snaptite kit of a prototype Hornet.

I remember that kit from when I was little… back when the snap tite series included actual DECALS. I have a 1/72 Hasegawa F-18C, and it includes the older A model fins so if you want them just let me know. I actually was thinking of getting the snap tite F-14 and 18 and building them just for fun. I can probably do better on them now then when I was 6![:D]
I remember those days too Rebel. I built the Hornet, a B26, a Blackbird, and the Shuttle. The Hornet was the first though. I think the paint scheme was the kicker. Blue and white were the local school colors and blue is my favorite. I was 7 the color was the big thing.
I’m not sure if the A’s fins are even correct. The stabalizers are distintly rounded. I haven’t gotten a good look at a referance for it to know. I can’t fathom where the went. It hasn’t moved in years before I retrieved it. Must be gremlins.
The ones on that snap tite are pretty round at the bottom, which isn’t really correct. The base should have a gentle curve to it so it’s kind of overdone. Hasegawa’s fins are correct if I remember right. I have other spares from other kits so I’ll check and see if I can find something that might work a little better. I has the SR, and the B-26 too. Did you ever build the P-51, Me-109, or P-40 they used to have in that series?
Nope, I started an f4 and never finished it. Same for testors f104 and b1. I left it for a while and started back with a 1/32 p40(still unfinished) and am tying to finish a small figure dio.
Congratulations again on your 1000th post, Courtney!!! How about a before and after picture of that hornet? It would be nice to see what you could do before to what you can accomplish now…

Yeah I thought I’d do some before (whats left if it now) and afters. Got a roll of film just to have it handy.
As for my dog handler. I’m cutting acrylic to make a dust cover and have had little success. After that I get to de fur the base and then I won’t have to seal it up some much, as I can just put the dust cover on it. Yes the hands are still in the box. I think I’m gonna have to pin the hand on where it broke at the wrist.(after I scratch built one out of putty over wire, naturally!!)
I’ve trying to orginize my time at the desk to after Little Bit feeds her kittens and leaves them and they are sleeping. I emptied my trash can and she refilled it for me. They are 3 wks old and their mama isn’t my biggest fan. Why she put them in my room I’ll never know.

Dog handler? Hands in the box? What, forgot to feed the pooch? I saw a special on Vietnam Dog handlers a few nights ago, made me cry. (sniff) Sounds like a really neat subject.
Anyway, glad to see SOMEONE is doing snap tites. I miss them. All except the Monogram P-40 with the vinyl stickers instead of decals. I accidently swallowed one of the shark mouths (I was 8). Thought I had to lick it to get it to stick. Bad memory.
My favorite was the Snoopy Sopwith Camel and the Red Baron Fokker, these also had motors which made them even more cool.[:D]

Yeah I started on the Snaptites and can’t part with them so I’m trying to update them. (I don’t want them to feel shoddy around the new stuff.) I should be able to Rework the Hornet (most intact) while the glue and paint dry on the Handler. Then on to the more banged up others. I need to get some glue for the clear acrylic to make the dust cover on the handler. Any suggestions??
Is it plexi-glass (ie GE or Lucite)? If it is, try a couple of things on a scrap piece. 1. Acetone administered through a Hypo needle. Some acrylics may have a compound that will make it resillient to Acetone.
2. Try a PVC adhesive. These however may leave a residue and scores the acrylic making it hard to rub out.
3. Plasticweld or Weld On 3, 4, or 5 are acrylic adhesives. I have used Weld On #3 for my cases with good results. I have not seen Weld On for a few years so have switched to Plasticweld, it doesn’t clean up as well as Weld on when rubbing out the seam. Dupont makes a glue that jewelers and glass artists use but it is very expensive and is hard to use. However, it will not leave any residue. Check with a glass supply shop.

Well, even thought I really shouldn’t have I went out and got the snap tite Hornet during lunch. it’s about half way done right now. I forgot about the F4 until I was heading back here. Just thinking of all those ones I did that got my skills to where they are today. I can’t wait to finish it. I’m thinking about converting it to a C. Anyways, as far as spare fins go I’ll look tonight and see if I got anything that might work for you.
I not sure what it is exactly, Scott. Thin clear plactic that flexable but breaks on a score line. It’s whatever Hobby Lobby carries. I’ve heard about clear acrylic adhesive. Would that work.

The reason I asked the type of material is that some are light transparancy acrylics (Plexiglass, Acrylite, and Lucite, found at Home Depot or Lowes). The process in making this type of plastic makes it so that using an acetone based adhesive won’t make the material soft and fog. Clear plastic found at hobby stores is more likely to be a polycarbonate or polystyrene. These will bond well with the adhesives I had mentioned but will fog and make abraisions in the plastic or completly melting it into a blob if the material is too thin. Since you said it is flexible and bends, it may be polycarbonate. An acrylic adhesive (Dupont and 3M brands) is the safest type to use on polycarbonate or polystrene when building a case, but will leave a visible seam. Clear bathroom caulk and trim molding adhesives are acrylics.
Rebel, lucky you to find those on your lunch hour. Snap tites, the model that you can built, take apart, and rebuild over and over and over.

Thanks, scott! I couldn’t use the thicker stuff. the dio is smaller then a 4"x6" card! The Thick stuff wouldn’t have fit in the lip of the base. Spring break is looming and I should have the time to do something.
