vmf-214 f4u-1d corsair

does anyone have good refrence pics of the blacksheep’s f4u-1d’s?

The pics I’ve seen show them flying -1s and -1As, and nmost were in the 3 color scheme. I’ll scrounge around and see what I can come up with.

I have read Pappy’s book, “Baa Baa Black Sheep” and the 214 was put together with borrowed equipment, so it’s possible that some were monotone as well as the 3 color scheme as well.

I am currently building an F4U1 that can be either an A or D model. Pappy’s most famous bird, Lulubelle, was a 1A in the three tone scheme. The colors are as follows with this page from the instruction sheet:

Dark shaded area- FS 35042 Non-Specular Sea Blue

Light shaded area- FS 35164 Intermediate blue

White area- FS 17875 Insignia white

Please note not the entire underside was white. The white on the main wing extends only to the folding wing joint. From there on out, it’s the Intermediate Blue. Click the pic to make it larger.

Also, you can go to www.vmf214.com and click on photos, and look around too. It’s in french, I think, but the pics are outstanding!!

The Squadon Signal book, Detail & Scale Part 1 and the Kagero F4U vol. 1 are all good references. Flight Journal, Warbirds & other magazines often have some great reference pics in them. The Kagero book even has decals in it! [:D]

Remember Lulubele/Lucybelle was just painted up for the photo op. Boyington never flew that plane. Some of the kill flags were backwards they did it so fast.

the kit i have is the hasegawa 1/72 scale -1d with painted canopy but the kit actually looks more a -1a.
