Virus/Worm Alert. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

This is URGENT, protect yourself asap. I have had 3 people come to see me today already about this on there home PC’s

Q. My computer keeps restarting after something to do with a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) terminates unexpectedly. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?

A. You’ve been hit by the RPC exploit, a serious flaw in the Windows NT line of Windows products (NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 Server). If this has happened, your system has been compromised, and your only option is pretty much to reformat and reinstall all your programs from known-good sources. Any single part of your system could be infected with who-knows-what, as the RPC exploit gives a malacious user unrestricted access to your system.

So Protect your system before you have to reformat (its the only solution once it’s happened), get the patch on ASAP People

What does this mean. It seems that a worldwide worm/virus is circulating. If you have Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0…you will need to download this patch. About 1/3 of home uses have been hit already in one day. This is a major worm, and could result in doing a complete reformat of your system.

If you have been infected, you will no becuase your system will reboot over and over again. If this is happening you will need to download this fix:

http://securityresponse.symantec.co…er/FixBlast.exe

All those who have not been infected and those who were infected and downloaded and installed the fix above, you will need to get the patch off of Microsofts page…

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

If you are using 2000, download 2000…if you are using XP Home or Pro…download XP 32bit.

If you are not using 2000, XP or NT 4.0, you are safe.

theres been a warning about this Virus/Worm on a airsoft site, and some Computer person has posted what to do if your having problems getting the patch.
here it is
For anyone having problems getting the patch (Thanks NEWSBOT3):

  1. Stop the problem from shutting you down, so you can fix it.
press Start-run, type ‘dcomcnfg’ (without the quotes) and press enter
Now goto Component Services, and double-click Computers.
Right-click My Computer and select properties. Goto the Default Properties tab, and DESELECT Enable Distributed COM on this computer
Press Apply, then ok, and close Component services.

  2. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DO
Now, reboot your machine. If you do not do this, someone can still have access to your machine, and can be causing more damage etc.

  3. Goto the MS site, and get the patch for this problem.

WinXP users should choose the ‘32 bit’ option

  1. Install patch

  2. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DO
Reboot your machine for the final time.

At this stage you can re-visit step 1 and re-enable Enable Distributed COM on this computer , its fine to do this as long as you have followed all the steps above.

  1. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO DO
Virus scan your machine. Since potentially, someone could have had complete control of your pc, you need to be sure its clean.

Thanks for looking out for everyone guys.
This is a very nasty and quick spreading little fellow.

One of those times where it’s lucky I still run Windows 98.

Thanks for thinking of us Moses.

It got me this morning. I booted up the computer and after 20-30 seconds, it would begin to reboot. Got around my Norton somehow. I think it rebooted like 10 times but then, it stopped.

I will get this download when I get home this eve…at work now [:(]

Thanks for posting the link Mo!

Symantec (aka Norton) didn’t have the virus definitions for this until yesterday. While the exploit has been known for the past couple of weeks, the virus itself is new. If you didn’t receive an update to your virus definitions yesterday, then Norton couldn’t catch it.

Your anti-virus software can’t do anything about the exploit – it can only try to prevent viruses or worms that are placed from the exploit.

As always, Symantec has good documentation to follow on how to fix your PC.

my Norton updated two days in a row so I’ll be okay I guess
this virus seems pretty mean.

Has this been posted in any of the other forums here at FSM, or are the target tank guys the only ones so deserving? [;)][:p]
