Vintage AMT Star Trek TOS shuttle craft

I just finished this for the lockdown GB.

It’s a crappy kit, but has nostogic value. I decided to build it OOTB, no mods/additions at all. All I added was glue and paint.

This is the later, 1990, release with clear front windows.

The upper paint is Tamiya Insignia white. The lower paint is Tamiya grey primer.

I clear coated with Tamiya gloss, decaled, the sealed with Tamiya semi matt clear coat.

The interior is Krylon celery with a Tamiya flat black floor and Tamiya gloss black on the seats.

Nice job on the old workhorse. Funny that this kit was so inaccurate considering AMT built the “real” one.

I like it. Looks cool and a nice backdrop to it too.

Oh cool! She looks good to me!

And yeah it’s funny that as Midnightprowler stated AMT built the actual prop- ya think the model would be more accurate.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m happy how it came out.

Yah AMT really blew it on the kit, and as said they should have had access to at least the plans being that they paid for it!

Thanks! The backdrop was something I put together for some of my Trek stuff, my take on the studio planet set. The front rock is from Vasquez rocks and the back rocks are from Bronson canyon, so a nice Trek tie in.

Hey that’s cool! Nice job. Screams for a couple figures.

Thanks!

I should see if the bridge crew matches up scale wise.

Very cool sir. It makes for a very nice display.

Thanks!

Gorgeous! Very well done.

I have this same kit in the stash. It will be coming up in the queue soon.

I took one of the figures from the AMT bridge set and put him next to the Galileo.

Looks close to me.

A little to big. Interesting tho as both are supposed to be about 1/32.

From a video on some guys who restored an original shooting prop bought off the backlot, AMT did not really make “plans” for this. Allegedly, they just put some dimensions on shome copies of storyboard sketches and told the prop makers “Get it Done.”

It took longer than expected to get the prop, which is why the transporter was introduced, the plot needed a way to get from ship to surface.

No body expected that, 50 years later there would be bunch of lunatics keen to reproduce this stuff to the last sheet of plywood [:)]

So true!

This came today, the Larson Products aftermarket resin kit for this kit.

It addresses the back very well, the interior not at all.

I have built Chris’s kits before. They build into very nice models but are not for the

inexperienced builder.

Ohhhhhhhhh, Mach71 those detailing parts look like the cat’s pajamas!

That’s a game changer for that kit.

I hope so!

While waiting for the new R2 kit, I’m going to give this a go.

I have 2 more classic AMT Galileo kit lest in my stash.

The new back end is test fitted, It’s going to need a bit of work.

The surgery has started:

I’ve never seen a build thread on this kit before, nor do I have an instructions from

the kit supplier.

I guess I’ll WAG it.

The top/aft will be interesting. I’ve made some cuts, I suspect I’ll have to cut deeper.

A rough guess on how much to take off. Putty will be my friend on on this build.
