I don’t think I am going to use the plastic sail that comes with the kit,
so I was wondering if you guys can give me tips on how to make a
nice sail (and not made of plastic!).
I am planning to make that paper kit and face the same dilemma. I plan to display it with the sail and yard lowered. But this brings up a question. When the sail and yard were lowered did they then unship the mast, or was the mast left up? To me a furled sail is much easier to make.
If I’m reading the original post correctly, gfuhr is asking about the Revell plastic kit. I started a thread a while back on the model I built from it. Here’s the link to that thread: cs.finescale.com/…/1673852.aspx .
In that thread I explained how I made the sail out of paper. It’s really simple; all it requires is some high-quality resume paper, some paint, and a roll of Scotch Magic Tape. (Resume paper, at least here in the U.S., is a rather stiff, cream-colored paper that has a visible weave, which looks remarkably like woven cloth on a small scale.) I’m quite satisfied with the result - and it’s held up well; I don’t remember just when I built the model, but it’s been several years, and the tape shows no sign of coming loose. I’m comfortable recommending that technique.
The following site has a pdf download of a monograph of the find of the original ship, with a lot of detail drawings of what was discovered. Would be quite useful to anyone building the model. Now all I have to do, is get one of the Revell kits.
