Vietnam Armour (Apocalypse Now) question.

[#wstupid]Does anyone know (of course you do) what kind of tank that is that rumbles out of the water beside the guys when they meet Kilgore? The one with the crazy white teeth that rolls over a mine? Are there any kits of that bad boy? Has anyone made one to show off? Thanks and I hope you are all having a great weekend!

Urrrrr, too long since I’ve seen this movie! The only armor I remember was an LTV-5 evacuating refugees from a village…

M

Yea that’s a good shot of that one…with the sand bags on top and the sign that says stay clear when horn blows!!

Yes, it was an LVT-5 with some sort of mine plow in that sequence. There also is a flame thrower M41 in the background portions.

Apoc. Now was filmed in the Phillipines. Therefore they used the military vehicles of said country to use in the film from the Vietnam era. M-41’s and LVTP5A1’s were what are in the film. One even has a mineplow on it. (The one tearing down the hootch.) All Choppers were Phillipine army machines too. I have dealt with the forces over there, and their equiptment scares the sh#$ out of me. Worn out, leaky, and old! At least it was when I was over there. BTW I watch Redux at least once a month just to keep my hand in. AFV club makes both of these kits, and Hobby fan I believe makes the plow for the LVTP5A1. Hope this helps.

Totally helps rudi…thanks mang!

OT, fantastic movie, maybe better than Platoon. Let the debates begin.

movie good, story totally bogus

ah, the same for all the Rambo, missing in action Delta force etc.type movies fun to watch but way not factual[zzz]

“story totally bogus” ummm — it was an adaption of the Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” – a classic set in Africa. Read the book and you’ll really understand the Apocalypse Now movie. Very chilling stuff…

“The horror…the horror.”

In my top 10 favorite movie lines. And they get used by me on a daily basis. [:D]

The toothy amtrac which comes up out of the water is a former Marine LVTE1, the engineer version of the LVTP5 personnel carrier. This same vehicle also made an appearance, this time as a Marine vehicle, in the often-forgotten “Boys in Company C” which was also shot in the Phillippines (of course, that movie had the Marines fielding M113s, so ya can’t win 'em all)…

Man, I have been waiting for a conversion for the amtrac to the engineer vehicle for years, but to my knowledge, no one has released it, not even Hobby Fan (who would no doubt charge a pretty penny for it)… AFV Club even has a drawing of it inside the amtrac’s box top.

Be advised that there is a slightly different configuration to the hatches and vents on the engineer version than there is on the amtrac, so be sure to check your references if you are scratch building it — if I remember right there was a “Steel Masters” magazine years ago where someone did a beautiful scratchbuild of the plow, etc.

FYI, AFV Club announced the “How 6” howitzer version of this vehicle about five or six months ago, but still no sign of it (along with their once-promised and much hoped for M-42 Duster)…

Good luck!

Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

It might be hard for people who haven’t read the book to understand the phrase “The Horror, the Horror…”

Jesse

bogus as that was not what our troops did or acted like in Viet Nam.

Africa, ok different fight different people, but the movie was more anti war than pro accurate story telling.

This may be a silly question, so I will ask it. Did the Air Cav ever work with the Marines like in Apocalypse Now?

Grizz

There actually was a guy very similar to Kurtz hanging out in the border region. The military hunted him for years, and never caught up with him. But he sorta waged his own little war in Laos. They even had a thing about him on the History Channel. Funny thing about him was that he looked a lot like Kurtz.

gary

Hey don’t forget that Kurtz whispers “The Horror” when he’s dying at the end of the movie. Then at the very end they loop it as the air strike comes in. Nevertheless, an awesome movie all around.

I don’t think they did work with the marines in Apocalypse Now. Willard was Airborne, the crew of PBR Street Gang were Navy, the Phantoms that came in and naped the tree line were Navy. I might be missing something here though Grizz. Anyone?

Sorry, let me rephase my question. They have LVTP 5’s with the Air Cav (in the movie). I assume (correct me if I am wrong) that only the marines used them. So, is having the LVTP’s just Hollywood or did the Air Cav and the marines ever work together in reality?

Grizz

One of my fav Vietnam flix’s “Hamburger Hill”.The way the hill start’s out coverd in tree’s and by the end it look’s like a barren muddy wastland it remind’s me of something out of WWI.

The mission to relieve the Marines at Khe San was led by the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) and called Operation Pegasus.
