After the holidays, Tom’s decided to fight back - so he’s enlisted the help of one of his turkey buddies: the 1/72 Hasegawa TBF Avenger. Tom (on the left) Is approx 1/24 scale, and I think he’s a Grumman made BH version (Bobble Head for those of you who aren’t familiar with the terminology)
This is the first Hasegawa kit I’ve built. Very nice detail. I finished it quite a while ago - but just got around to taking pics. Hope you like it ! I had fun building it.
Fine looking Avenger, and I like it when modelers go for that attractive Atlantic Fleet “seagull” gray and white scheme. It’s a very attractive scheme. It is a break from all those blue-over-white or all over Sea Blue machines we see modeled all the time.
TOM
Thanks again guys - I chose that scheme cuz I liked it the best too - and it makes it stand out a little more as something different on the display. I had decal options for either the atlantic or a tri-color scheme.
Drew, I couldn’t believe how easy this one went together. Absolutely no problems at all. The wheel wells were kinda shallow (not to scale) but there was pretty nice detail in there for my taste. I think they did a great job on the surface detail, the engine, the gear & wheels. A super detailer might want to buy AM parts for the interior - but it was fine for me. In 1/72 scale, many people can’t even see if you use the decal for the instrument panel or whether you went to the trouble of using AM parts.
I usually don’t go for the pricier kits - I can’t see paying full retail for one of these babies - but I got this one for $6 at a IPMS show - couldn’t pass it up. I would especially recommend it to you if you need a break from sanding [;)], everything fit together perfectly - & not an ounce of filler required.
After this one, I built the Testors Dauntless. That had decals for an Atlantic version. I decided to do that one in the earlier grey/blue scheme. If I do another Dauntless - I’ll probably use the atlantic scheme.
Nice work on your Avenger build. I enjoy seeing non-traditional paint jobs on aircraft models, and yours certainly doesn’t disappoint. Thanks for posting.
Hiya Chris,
Very nice build indeed… Did you air brush this kit?? What type of paints did you use??
By the way Chris, where bouts are you from in WNY?? I’m from “Factory Town USA” aka Niagara Falls…!! Ever been to Ace Hobby Shop??? Just wondering[;)]
Flaps up, Mike
Mike,
I own a single action Aztec that I use… hmmmm… very rarely… like never.
All of my stuff is brush painted with Testors MM acrylic. I love that stuff. I’ve gotten away from using enamels. I still have some, but I’m gradually running out my supply.
I’m not as far west as you ! You’re practically Canadian ! [;)] I’m just outside of Rochester. I lived in Buffalo for ~ 10 yrs during and after college - but I wasn’t building then. Can’t say I’ve heard of Ace Hobby Shop.
Other than THE FALLS themselves, and the good times I had there with friends - the one thing I remember most about NF was driving past the shredded wheat factory. That smelled soooo good ! Is it still up and running ?
Hiya Chris,
Come on, you’ve never heard of Ace Hobby Shop??? Its only been open now for about 60yrs…!!![:p][;)] Just messing around.
If I am not mistaken good ol Shredded Wheat is now closed…!!! Yeah I know what you mean about the smell especially in the fall. God I loved going pasted there!!! O thats right, they closed and moved to their Canadian location. Go figure only about a hour away where they were on Buffalo Ave[:(].
I’m sure you have been on third street right?? Unc’s, Braggs?? Still the same I’m affraid… LOL[:p]
MMmm do you by chance belong to the Rochester IPMS club?? As for painting free hand, thats a very nice job my friend…!!!
Looking forward to seeing you around. Keep in touch…!!!
Flaps up, Mike
No - I don’t belong to the IPMS group in Rochester - although I’ve thought about going - it hasn’t been huge on my to-do list. (things that are on my to-do list often go un-done)
I have managed to make it to the last three annual contests though - just as a spectator - not a participant. I don’t know how anyone could really judge those things - there are so many incredible pieces.
I think I heard that NorEast Con will be in Rochester this fall. I’ll probably be there - so if you see a grey haired geeky lookin guy - say Hi. Oh wait a minute, hmmmm … this could be more difficult than I thought…
