Looks like this is a Japanese item, as I can’t read the instructions without the aid of Google translate!!
My box is open, but all parts are present and in their plastic bags.
I’d like to sell it on eBay, but I’m not sure if it’s value. I think it is pretty rare… The above two sites are about all I can find. I’ve seen just one auction on eBay, and they aren’t getting any bites at $300!!!
You’ve already done what I was going to advise you to do-look on eBay for the same kit. I’ll add some detail to that advice: Follow that auction. Note the seller’s asking price. See whether it attracts any bids or sells, at the seller’s asking price. Or does the auction end without bids? That gives you an idea.
Also, decide what you want to achieve.
Do you want to make as much money as you can on the sale? Then you might price yours around the price of that existing auction, and see where it goes. Or you might post it as a Buy It Now, at that price, or post it with a lower opening bid but a reserve price. In any case, you may wind up waiting till someone bites.
Or do you just want to get it out of your stash as quickly as possible? They you might price it at half of what other sellers ask for it, or even lower. But that would make it more likely that someone will bid or buy it.
That choice will be the same, no matter where you offer the kit for sale-get the most money for it, or simply move the kit?
If you want the most money you can get, then it’s definitely worth the time to research a little further, watching for sales of the kit on eBay and other secondary market sites, and seeing what they go for.
Ebay allows you to look at sold items in a search. It doesn’t go back far, maybe three months, but it should give you a feel for what the product is worth.
And I say feel because I’ve seen wild swings in purchase price for the same item.
I must be searching wrong. I searched for “Aoshima Delorean”… Trying to keep it generic in order to find as many as possible. After checking completed items, I don’t see a single one like mine that I linked to above. None have the same box art.
If you don’t mind, can you include a link to one you found so I can see what I’m doing wrong?
OK, you haven’t seen the same boxing that you have. But were those examples the same kit, just without that box? That information is still useful, because you can establish a baseline for what people are willing to pay for the kit-a bagged kit for example, all parts, the decals, the instructions are there, just no box. Or maybe it’s a different boxing of the kit. If there are a lot of kits without a box, or a lot of kits with a different box, then that helps establish a comparison between those examples and the one you have.
As far as searching is concerned, I just ran a search in US eBay (www.ebay.com) on “aoshima delorean”, and it returned 217 active results:
I didn’t do anything particularly refined. I only ever use the Search field at the top of every page in eBay, just a basic keyword search, no filters (eg, category). I very seldom use the advanced search feature; I haven’t really ever needed to.
Well, the kit he has the links to is the railroad version for the third movie. I’ve heard it is more uncommon than the ‘normal’ De Lorian from the first film and the flying version from the second. According to the ‘Fantastic Plastic’ site he linked this version has never been reissued by AMT or any US company. I don’t think it’s nearly as popular though.
So what’s it worth- sorry no clue here.
GH: I’m posting because I think I have better advice for you though. Have you tried spreading rumors that the mine is haunted? I’m sure one of the ghost hunter TV shows would take it off your hands… [;)]
Come up with something good- maybe One-Eyed Jack ruined his marriage, lost his job and his friends, even lost his eye in a quest for the claim that would make him a billionaire. Then when he finally found it a dirty claim-jumper stole it right under his nose. In a drunken rage he beat the claim-jumper to death with a rusty pickaxe and burnt down the lawyer’s office. Disappearing into the mine his last words were ‘DEATH TO ANYONE WHO MESSES WITH MY CLAIM!!!’ It’s rumored that even today anyone who enters the mine could disappear and never be seen again…
