Vallejo Model Color

i just wanted to drop a thread and salute the makers of Vallejo acrylic paints. i took a trip to Pensacola this past weekend and the hobby shop down there had vallejo paints so i purchased the basic starter kit which has black, white, red, yellow, green, and blue. i highly recommend these paints for hand brushing cockpits and such!![bow][bow][bow] my hats off to this brand as it levels out beautifully, has just the right amount of open time, ease of use with the built in eye dropper top, and the hide qualities of this paint is excellent. the only color i had to second coat was yellow of course, but overall an enjoyable experience. it makes painting cockpits and such fun again. i havent tried airbrushing it yet and really dont have a use to, but for hand painting, its my choice from now on. later.

Have to agree with you saltydog, I been experimenting with them over the last few months and have been very impressed by them. I like the way they they go on, the bottle they come in, and the ease of clean up. My main use for them is fiqure painting but I am going to try them for armor, once I master air brushing them.

Chris,

I haven’t tried them yet but I did see them at one hobby shop here.
Have you ever tried Polly Scale for hand brushing? It always worked well for me in the past if I added a drop or two of dishwashing soap to the paint bottle.

Mike

I’ll be interested to see how they airbrush Chris. I’ve seen these in the store before, but never bought them. If they airbrush nicely, I might have to pick some up, the eyedropper in the bottle makes it super nice. I rarely handbrush anything but the smallest detail parts, and I have all the colors I need in Model Master.

I’ve been using Vallejo for the last few years and they are the best Acrylics for brush painting that I have ever used. I use them for painting small details in AC cockpits as well as for smaller figures, up to 54mm. Never tried to airbrush them, but they have released a new formulation specifically designed for air brushing. I think they are being marketed under the " Aircraft Colors" brand name, but I haven’t purchased or tried them yet.

mike, its no use in trying the PS since i’ve just purchased the starter kit, but thanks for the tip anyway, i may try it if i get into a bind. i only own 3 bottles of PS anyway.

josh, i’m like you, i have all the colors i need for the exterior in either mm enamel or tamiya so i really dont see myself trying to airbrush with vallejo anytime soon. i have the “model color” line which i think is specifically designed for figure painting. i have several aftermarket cockpits to paint so i decided to invest in some good quality figure paints and i’m definetly not dissappointed.

rick, i’ve heard of the “aircraft colors” line from vallejo but i have too many mm enamel and tamiya colors to even think about buying another line of paint. later.

RJK - I have been airbrushing the “Aircraft Colors” line since last fall, and I can tell you that they are awesome! Excellent coverage straight from the bottle. As Saltydog has said, the yellow needs a couple coats (several light ones for airbrushing), but what yellow doesn’t!
I’ve been using primarily the RLM colors. They all go on great with no primer, and if you use the right masking, it won’t lift either. Even RLM 65 blue will cover right over any other darker color (such as RLM 70 or 71). I use floquil’s reefer white to undercoat the yellow, and believe it or not, it’s an easy mistake (for me) to get the yellow too dark.

If I have one complaint, it’s that these colors are “toned down” which I really don’t care for. If anyone has a suggestion for toning them “up”, I’d really like to hear it.

The really nice thing though, is the eyedropper bottle. I can put just the right amount into my A/B cup to do a little touch up, or paint small items with minimal waste.

I’m with you Salty, these paints are great!
