Here is my first build log…and first ship…1:350 scale Sovermenny Class Destoyer from Trumpeter.
I have the upper hull attached to the rear and fore deck. The fit was pretty good with only a small amount of filler required for the aft and tip of the decks. Next I will be working on the 14 life raft, which in the last 20 minutes I have not sucessfully attached one to the base (very small and I don’t think that the male and female parts are sized right for fitting.
Just a question, I was thinking of painting the upper hull and decks now as opposed to painting the deck after the parts are attached. It seems to me that it would be almost impossible to repaint the separate parts without getting some paint on the deck.
Can someone how has knowledge of this kit recommend the best course of action. Also, looking for the best paint match for the Russian grey, the deck and the orange deck to be done later.
No sure about the 1:350 scale. But there are many good build articles and gallery for the 1:200 scale Trumpeter kit. The one at Kipperboexes is very comprehensive. Also an excellent one at the modelwarships.com.
That second link was a godsend…I was trying different mixes and grey scales to get the right look. The second link has the perecentages and in Tamiya paint…
Hope to have progress pics this weekend now that I will do the paint mixes.
You can do a search on “Russian deck red” on this forum and get some additional information too. The deck red is another difficult to match color for the Russian fleet.
Your best bet for an out-of-thebottle (well the tin) match will be the Russian Deck Red from White Ensign Model’ Colourcoat line of paints. They also match the hull colors too.
I order direct from WEM. Shipping it fast & reasonable (I’ve placed an order Saturday afternoon (Texas time) and it was received the following Wednesday – UK to Texas!
Order with a credit card and let them handle the exchange rate.
John & Caroline Snyder and David Carter at WEM are good people to do business with.
If you don’t want to do the direct purchase thing, contact John at WEM and ask about vendors in Canada. There are a couple – I just don’t know their locations.
