USS Virginia and USS Long Beach colors Vallejo paint match?

Any Vallejo paint matches for the hull superstructure and decks of Cold War CGNs?

Haze Gray is the primary color and decks are Deck Gray. But Vallejo does not make USN ship colors by those names in their main line up. These alternative colors will work: Neutral Gray FS 36270 is a good substitute for Haze Gray. Gunship Gray FS 36118 is a good replacement for Deck Gray.

Hi Stik:

I would like to modify what you said a little if I may. The Gunship grey is a good choice. I usually take one large drop of Sea Blue( Flat) to give it that Bluish tint. Years ago I found that the Blue Grey on Middies uniforms at the Academy looked great as deck color on a modern Cold War Model Ship!

Haze Grey varied in some places. When we Got painted in Sasebo,Japan, the " Haze Grey’ Had less of a Bluish cast to it when viewed from afar. It was only noticeable at a distance on a sunny day. More like Fog Grey. T.B.

I don’t doubt you on that TB. Passing by Seal Beach NWS nearly every day for the past 7 years I’ve seen plenty of ships in port there uploading or offloading munitions. Depending upon atmospheric conditions, angle of the sun, etc., I’ve seen quite a variety in the appearance of the haze gray, even the same ship on the same day. Those two colors are just good starting points. Sometimes I even think Engine Gray FS 36081 is an option for Deck Gray as well. Especially for a more grubby look.

To add further, flight deck surfaces want to be a dark color, NATO Black will resemble brand new, unworn surfacing. This can be too dark, so, lightening it with some Deck Gray works.

Non-slip surfaces can be rendered by adding some Black to Deck gray. (Which also allows using a ‘straight’ black for the anchor rodes.

Also, Virginia was from a later era, so if you display them side by side, you ought follow Tanker’s suggestion. Add some blue to the haze gray for Virginia, and a touch of white to that applied to Long Beach.

Long Beach was treated like a flagship, and was kept in very pristine paint. Virginia and California tended to a splotchy sort of appearance–if less than the “easter egg” ships have sported since the CARC paints have been introduced.
