I just noticed that the nuclear powered cruiser USS Long Beach kit from Revell has been reissued. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this kit as far as quality, accuracy, fit etc. Would it be a good addition to my collection? Also does anyone know if a kit was ever produced of the USS Bainbridge, the other nuclear cruiser?
Thanks, I was wondering because I have a 1:350 Enterprise and this would be close in scale as a pair but not if it isn’t of the same quality as my Tamiya Enterprise.
I do a fair amount of both 1:350 and 1:700. Sometimes I get frustrated with PE on the 1:700 kits and have to do a quick build on a tank or something just to get the frustration worked out. Thanks for the info on the JAG kits. They look great. Are the JAG kits complete kits or do you have to scratch build some of things like masts etc.?
Aurora once did a USS Bainbridge kit, but I do not know its scale or accuracy. It has been many decades since I last saw that kit.Back then, the ship was not a cruiser; it was a DDGN.
I have never built a JAG kit, but understand that they do not have the “basic” PE - railings and such - but do include any ship-specific PE for that particular kit. The kits generally get good reviews for the important things like fit, overall accuracy and general ease of assembly. Both their Long Beach and Bainbridge kits are reviewed at www.modelwarships.com.
Bainbridge was a DLGN originally, a destoyer leader, but was redesignated as a CGN later in her career, as were all the rest of those types of nuclear powered DLGs.
If your in the market to mate up that Enterprise with the USS Long Beach get an Ironshipwrights LB. They also have the Bainbridge too and almost all the nuke CG’s. These kits are very expensive though, but very detailed ! I would even say that the Ironshipwrights stuff is the best. they come with all the trimmings as well huge PE set. The LB goes for $350.00 and the Bainbridge is $259.95, but I’m sure if you shoot him an email and buy them both at the same time he will give you a break on price. He did it for me when I bought 2 USS Oklahoma’s.
