I am painting my Dragon 1/700 Arizona and was was wondering how wide the black boot stripe is. Any help would be appreaciated.

What’s your guess? Four- five feet?
judging by the size of the upright sailor just forward/left of the bow I would estimate say 3 feet. The stripe looks to run rougly equal the distance of his groin to the top of this head.
but then again looking at this image of USS Pennsylvania later in the war and comparing the figures on deck the stripe looks closer to 5 or 6 feet in width, and not very neatly done along the lower edge
Judging by the men sitting on the bosun’s chairs, I’d think close to 3 feet as well on the first pic.
My observation in general is that the things are wider than you’d think.
And…1/16" tape at 1/700 scale is 43.75 inches, just saying.
If you could find 3/32 inch tape, or 2.5 mm, that’d be swell.

I happen to have this exact kit as a WIP at the moment. Just measured the stripe that I have painted and it is almost exactly 2.5mm maybe a hair less. Not sure if its exactly correct but aesthetically it looks pretty good to me.

Both photos are interesting, each showing what appears to be a different width for the boot stripes. One other point of interest . . . the stripe appears higher up on the hull in the WWII photo; there seems to be less freeboard than on the earlier photo. This would be reasonable given the increase in weight due to conversions and the addition of AA armament and the change in secondary armament. It is also consistent with eye witness accounts from crewmen during the war that show that the Pennsylvania’s armor belt was usually below water. Another point to consider is that neither photo illustrates the ship in question, the 1941 version of USS Arizona.
Tracy White has done extensive research on the issue of Arizona’s color scheme in 1941. It would be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Looking at the deck in your Photobucket library, you’ve done a nice job laying it down. Is it an Artwox deck? There are several areas forward that would seem to be problematic as far as fitting that wood deck is concerned. Again, nice job.
