I need some help finding a plastic kit of the Alabama. At one
time I thought there was a company selling a large scale version of this great battleship.I thought it was 1/96 scale. My dad
served on her in the Pacific.Any help finding a kit of this ship would be greatly appreciated. The larger the better.
Thanks for your help Davey 5 DHI69@aol.com
I remember seeing a model of the USS Alabama at the Battleship Park in Mobile AL. That was about 3 years ago, but there were several of them. I don’t have the phone number, but the Chamber of Commerce for Baldwin County AL might could give you a lead. The State Park Athourity may also be able to help. They also had a USS Drum sub model along with several others of interest in the gift shop.
Thanks Holley .I 've been to the Alabama in Mobile twice and they had a 1/700
waterline kit that you could buy.I did not think to ask about the larger ships. So I think I will make a couple off phone calls. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

I don’t doubt that you have seen a larger scale model of the Alabama,…
I would just like to point out that at 1/96 scale the model would be 7’-1" long[:D] That would be a cool model You can probably get plans from “Floating Drydock”
Most of the sites I found offered 1/700 scale kits.
The Museum store online offered this 1/720 kit by Revell

Thanks UMI I think the kits were a one off thing done by a small company. The ones they
sold were samples they recieved for the store to inspect. The store tried to order some
but they never showed up.The scale was 1/196 , 90% resin. thanks for your reply.I have built a couple of the 1/700 water lineand I need to do something larger.

Hi davey,
Floating drydock has the plans for the BB-59 Massachusetts.

and the Hull frames here

If you can’t find “The” model you want you can always scratch build it.
If you have a bandsaw, scroll saw, or even a jig saw, it would be relatively easy to build up the ship from plywood frames.
Here is a little photo set showing the build up for ship hulls. [:)]

Good luck with your project.
I remember an article about that ship (or something similar). I’ll try to find the article.
The Scale Shipyard sells a 1/96 scale hull and superstructure casting for the South Dakota class, along with all of the weapons and many of the detail parts. While not a cheap project, it is indeed impressive when they are done. Dave Manley in San Diego has built one, and it looks outstanding out on the water running- you can see pictures of it on my website, under my sig line.

Let us know DAVEY5, if you find one, expecialy interested in photos when you finish. I spent a lot of summer days exploring the ship in Mobile when I was younger.
I know there is a 350 scale resin kit out there for a few hundred. I’ve heard someone is scheduled to release it in plastic within a year or so, I don’t know if two foot long is what you need
davey5 ---- Hello and lets get this show on the road. I assume you mean plastic as in model kit from a hobby store. Here,s what you do .Go to your local hobby outlet(if it is a regular hobby shop ,great!) And you,ll find the U.S.S.ALABAMA by TRUMPETER. I have one of those ,a NORTH CAROLINA and a SARATOGA and I personally think they,re great kits. You can enhance them with photoetch kits for an outstanding model. There,s also a upgrade set in resin for the late war 1945 layout of the ALABAMA. I hopes gets you headed in the right direction. tankerbuilder
i agree i just got the trumpter kit of the uss massachuetts bb59… it in her 1949 fit, but you can find aftermarket kits to back date her to 1945… I don’t know what size u really want… 1/350 makes a good display size…regardless they also have a 1/700 scale version… what ever you get… it made with love that what matters the most… enjoy
