I am in the process of building aircraft that my father flew for the USN in WWII. I have located a SB2C Helldiver (ProModeler) and just finished a SBD Dauntless. I have YET to find:
Grumman ‘Duck’, North American SNJ, Boeing Stearman N2S-3, Chance Vought OS2U Kingfisher, Convair Valiant
Net surfing/research has come up empty as far as kits go for these aircraft. If anyone knows where I could find these…Please drop a line. Thanks again for any help or suggestions. galvbay
Thanks so much for the help. I just checked Ebay and only found the Helldiver. I did look at the site that gulfstream suggestion for the ‘Duck’. Thanks! That is exactly what I was look for. This is a super forum…thanks again. galvbay
Thought I would add a picture of the SBD next to my father’s Flight Log Book. He had several hours in the Dauntless but was acutally assigned to a Helldiver Sqdrn at Wildwood in New Jersey. The Helldiver will be my next attempt!
Nice looking model and I like the spirit behind your builds. What a neat piece of memorabilia to have in the log book. Talk about inspiriation for a build!
The SNJ is the USN version of the Army/Air Force AT-6 which Monogram made. I can’t remember the scale but it would be easy to find if it is out of production.
North American SNJ - either the Modelcraft or Monogram AT-6 Texan wil do. Look for the kits and after market SNJ decals at GreatModels or Squadron.com.
Boeing Stearman N2S-3 - This one you’ll have to wait for an out of production PT-17 Stearman kit to pop up on eBay. Some versions of the kit (depending on how old) had N2S decals. Yellow Wings decals might have some.
Convair Valiant - Sanger Engineering makes a Vultee Valiant (SNV) in vacuform. You’ll have to order directly from Sanger → http://www.sangereng.fsnwt.co.uk/
The “Valiant” may be the most difficult to find. If it’s the same kind of aircraft I’m thinking about (a ‘BT-13’ trainer) it was better known as the Vultee Valiant.
There have been several 1/72 kits available in the past. According to the Great Models retail hobby web site, the Czech company “Planet Models” is planning a 1/48 kit but no word on when.
