USMC SNIPER GHILLIE SUITS

I am going to build a diorama featuring marine snipers and I would like to build them with ghillie suits in 1/35 scale. Can anybody help me?

Thank You

Randy Cox

Happy 4th of July

Hey Randy - pretty slow in here today due to the holiday, don’t be surprised if there’s not much response to this right away. Ghillie suit huh!?

I’m an airplane guy so this is out of my comfort zone. Looks like there are a wide variety of options, but you’re going to end up needing to find groundwork (leaves, grasses etc.) that is specifically for camoflage, or maybe something from the model railroad world. Mix in a little natural fibre of some kind to add some variety & start gluing! I wonder if you’d be able to apply the camo to strips of material, then glue that to your figure a strip at a time??

It’ll make an interesting model, that’s for sure. Good luck with it. [Y]

Hi Randy. Sounds like a nice project if you’re making the suit from scratch. I was around the suits quite a bit during my military days and what I remember was a variety of material was used in the making of the suit, depending on the terrain it was supposed to model. I remember at least 4 different types, though I’m sure there were more, and they probably look different from when I was around them in the 90’s.

There’s a ton of info on the web, of course, so you should have quite a bit of research material to choose from. As for modelling the suit, it depends on the type of suit. Most suits are made up of strands of material, like string. You could probably get away with threads of varying thickness and lay them individually. It would be a time consuming process but the results would be very nice. You could also use very thin, narrow strips of paper. I would probably use some kind of tissue paper since it will lay better. For either medium you could mix up a water/white glue concoction to make them materials lay naturally. After drying the suit could probably be painted.

I hope this helps. I’m more of a ship builder myself but saw your thread and it got me thinking. Good Luck. When you start make sure you post picks. I’m interested to see how you do it.

hello randy, i have often thought of doing this project as well so far i have come to the conclusion . the idea came to me while i was building another project. it’s going to take strips of kleenex and sewing thread mixed together with the help of diluted white glue and might want to use tweezers for this idea. by the time this comes dry i am thinking that it will dry as hard as plastic in the end and should be paintable. I hope this idea comes to life for ya, keep me posted let me know how well it come out

CMK makes a set if snipers in ghillie suits.

Legend makes a set of modern snipers in ghillie suits as well.

How the hell do we edit posts now??? This new forum sucks!!!

OK, found it. I still don’t like the new forums. Adding pics is a PITA now too.

Gino, on your own posts, ONLY, there’s a little pencil down in the left corner.
