USMC M60A1 ODS - Color Question

Hi guys I was wondering if you could help me please, I am just about to start on the Tamiya USMC M60A1 with ERA from Operation Desert Storm and I have a question on color.

Can someone tell me what would be the best Gunze, Tamiya Humbrol or MM Enamel color for a Desert Tan M60? I have done a bit of hunting around but have so far drawn a blank as to which shade would be best. Btw, I already have a bottle of MM 1706 Sand & MM 1704 Armor Sand but unfortunatley I don’t have access to either Polly Scale or MM Acryl.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi(s) you’re my only hope [:)]

My personal choice is MM Modern Desert Sand, S-1963
FS 33637 is the color you want, so use that number for other paints…

Almost any sandy color will do. The tanks were quickly repainted in Saudi Arabia with locally obtained sand paint. There were many variations. Testors Model Master has a Gulf War Army/Marine Sand that was made using paint chips of one that came back. It is a more brown than regular sand. It is probably the best choice if you are looking for something that is “accurate”.

Model Master has a specific color call US Army/Marine Gulf War Sand. It is in thier Model Master II line. It is a very good match.

Ours were all done at CONUS OMS’s and National Guard MATES with CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) paint then trailered straight to the railhead… Some weren’t painted at all and went with the normal NATO 3-color (Like ALL our soft-skins)… Division didn’t want to repaint OCONUS because of the CARC requirement…

I agree with Gino plus, during ODS there was mutiple sites here and over in SA where vehicles were painted. You could use the MM GW Sand. But almost any Sand would do.

  • There were many variations in shade to begin with
  • The different paints faded differently
  • The weathering after moving in the sand box for a while affected the color

No matter what you use, in sand color, it would be hard to prove you wrong. Starting with the MM keeps you safe.

Rounds Complete!!

Thanks a bunch for the information guys it’s exactly what I needed, looks like a trip to the LHS is in order tomorrow.

Cheers
