All right guys, I really need some help. I’m looking at doing a 1/48 scale USMC F-4 and A-4 from Kaneohe Marine Base in Hawaii circa 1983. I was graduating high school at the time, and lived right outside the base. I used to go out to the end of the runway on my daily runs, and watch them take off all the time.
I know for a fact that there was a unit there that flew F-4’s but am not sure what type (I think F-4S), and I need to know which squadron it was. They also had a few (4 I think) A-4’s. They were two seat TA-4J’s or OA-4M’s. Again I can’t remember which ones they were and am not sure if they were simply assigned to the F-4 unit, or were a seperate unit. Anybody have any idea? I also would like to get the decals for both aircraft.
OK…I bow down to the knowledge filled in everyone’s head here on the forums.
Former marine airdales…any ideas???
**Blackwolf…**I’ll bet you even have a few pictures of these birds stashed away somewhere. They’s be EXTREMELY helpful for replicating the paintchemes.
I find that VMFA 212 and VMFA 232 were at Kaneohe in 1983. It doesn’t say that they were permanent duty there. 212 was coded WD and 232 WT. HAMS 24 was there in 82, and I would guess 83. They had TA4F’s. WWW.NE.JP has serials of the aircraft in the squadrons at that time, and WWW.AIRLINERS.NET has pictures of 212 Phantoms and HAMS TA4’s.
Sal. This may be the scheme for the Phantoms. It’s the only one I have. Well, I do have a couple of others but I think they were experimental.
I don’t have anything for the TA-4Fs.
I found a George Hall pic of a Reserve F-4S from VMFA-112 based out of Kaneohe that I’m scanning for you. It’s got the same scheme that chopperfan linked to. I don’t know the exact year, but it’s from the early to mid 80s. It’s a piece of the puzzle. Sorry, don’t know anything about the Scooters.
Sal,
I was stationed at NAS Barbers Point from 1976 to 1979. The Marine squadrons stationed at Kaneohe Bay were VMFA 212 and VMFA 232. At that time both of those squadrons flew the F4-S. I am not sure what unit flew the TA4-F’s. I had taken some photo’s of one of the VMFA 212’s birds. If I find it I will try to get it to you.
