Using metal foils

Hi everyone! I built one model using bare metal foil and I was happy with the potential (note I did not say “result”). It turned out fairly decent but I know it will look better once I gain some experience with the medium of foil.

My question is this: As a “for instance”, let’s say there is a color band such as the ones found on many B-17s as squadron markings. How does one do this when working with foil? I assume masking the area will result in pulled-up foil. Do you paint the area first and THEN lay the foil down? Is this the general rule when it comes to anti-glare panels, invasion stripes, etc when working with foils? Thanks in advance!

One method I use is wet newspaper. Use it as a mask. Being wet allows it to stick and it will not pull up the foil when removing. Make sure it is good and wet, not damp. Use a paper towel or cloth to remove any water runs prior to painting.
