US StugIII (Stug40)

Hello Everyone! I’m a newbee here from Hungary, and this is my first model to post.

The model is a Revell 1:35 Stug 40 w/ some home made conversions and extras. (f.e. zimmerit armor)

This photo was the basic for this assault gun. I found it in a book…it shows a captured Stug, which was used by the US Army. (104th Inf Div, to be exact.)

Hey Tom–excellent! I was actually going to do my StuG G in this mode, with the concrete and all…I got the idea from this photo as well!

Looks like ya did a great job on it; my only question is, are you sure it was overpainted with OD? Formy money i would think that they wouldn’t have had the time or interest to go through the trouble of taking it back to a maintenance shop…I think the photo looks a little light for OD?..

Regardless, it’s a nice looking model!–certainly doesn’t look “noobie” to me!![:D] Welcome to the armor forums! Look forward to seeing more of your stuff!

BTW, I love Budapest–gorgeous architecture, and that “War Square/Plaza” down by the museum, and old castle, with all the 15-foot stone statues of all the old Hungarian warlords just gives me the chills every time I see it! The warriors on horseback are AWESOME!

Thank you! No it was od or dark green. I began this project in 2002, but i quit modelling, 'til now. (Not interesting, many reasons.) Only the upper hull was finished…so a few months ago i started again, and try to find this pic. After a month i found i9n the net…and make some more search about it…and found the Timberwolfes website, (104th Inf), and there somebody mentioned this in a note…(im not sure it was the Twolfes site.)

I’m happy to hear you were in Hungary. Come again and try not just Budapest. I recommend Szeged to next.

PS.: Sry for my english…i havent got too much practice occasions…

Wow, that’s interesting that it WAS overpainted–or could it even have been a German field application, or one of those regulation changes to overall green? Hmmm…

I’ll have to do some research–now you’ve REALLY got me curious![:D]

Doog: the lightness of the picture can’t determine whether it’s OD or dk yellow. This pic appears in Sq/Signal’s Sturmgeschutz In Action and it looks much darker, too. I think the determining factor is the contrast btn the stars and the basecoat. I’ve seen other US captured German vehicles that did get repainted in OD so it wasn’t unheard of. It’d be the safe thing to do anyways. I’ve always assumed it was OD but I can’t be 100% sure of course.

Nice StuG III!

Good point T26E4! I am duly educated![(-D]

I think it cant be dark yellow…look at the white stars. Too bright, sharp for a light basic…rather a dark basic…od or green, 'cause it cant be panzergrey('44!!)

Tomgray - That’s the coolest looking Stug III I’ve ever seen. Superb job, and quite unique. You’ve just sparked my imagination up a couple of notches with your build.

Welcome to the forum…

Larry

I forgot to say…I love your GI figure holding the coffee mug… perfection.

Thank you very much! That is a Dragon figure w/ Verlinden head unfornately i havent got a jeep capped head, like in the original picture…but i think its okay.

Three more pics:

Hello,

It is so nice to see something , " Completely Different " . What’s next , a SdKfz 251 ( D) , OD with US markings ( I have seen pics of them ), that would be interesting ! Keep up the great work , and Happy Modelling !

Frank

PS. I have an old Tamiya 1/25 Panther " A " , that I would like to complete in Russian markings . But the pics show it in overall dark green , with a 3 digit numerical callsign , on the turret , but I cannot tell if it still had the zimmerit , did the new owners scrape it off ?

Hello ,

The Stug , in question , I think was no doubt repainted dark green , or OD. I believe it was more of a " trophy " , than anything else , kind of something to show off to the media , or brass . One of the pics I have it , in a magazine , depicts a MP 44 , in the loaders position , as opposed to a MG 34 or 42. I hope this helps.

Frank

I have a book that covers Battle of Bulge and has pictures of German Vehicles disguised as U.S. vehicles (by Germans). So I guess it may not be uncommon thing to see German vehicles in OD instead of Dark Yellow.

Welcome to FSM tomgrey. You know me as SturmTiger on the Tanks in WWII forums.Nice job on the Stug.

I really like it. Keep building!

The vehicle of Lieutenant Sotnikov retained the Zimmerit, as seen in this drawing:

It can be seen in photos too.

Thanks everyone! No, the next one is not the sdkfz (but i think about it, i’ge got great bictures, about many versions used by us)…the next one is real us made White scout car in Bastogne…
Made by Zvezda…awful… i used a full tube putty for it already.

Hello Sturm/TD! Thanks!

Very nice model. Great subject. Keep up the good work…Guy
